Skoda Fabia - Belt or Chain? - Skimbleshanks

We have a 1.4 16v petrol Fabia 57 plate, I was wondering if this had a belt or chain for the timing. If it's a belt when does it need changing?

It will tell you in the service book if you look.

It should be a belt on the 1.4 16v engine

actually it should have 2 belts

It's two belts on this engine

1) Between crank and cam shaft no 1

2) Between camshaft no 1 & 2

On this engine change cam belts, pulleys and water pump at 4 years / 40,000 miles (whichever is sooner). The pulleys are made of plastic and can fail. This is much sooner than shown in the original owners manual.

On my Octavia 1.4 16v(same engine) started failing at 50,000 miles but inside 3 year warranty.

I wonder when manufacturers are going to spot that saving a couple of quid by using plastic cambelt pulleys, at the risk of writing off several grand's worth of engine, is something of a false economy?
