Well yes - but only if the engine has been badly maintained most of it's life - in which case mose other things would be wrong as well.

Why do you suggest the valve lifters ?

dont know really looking for any possible reasons for lack of compression the car has a good servive record

Time to get the diagnostic codes read.

The cam belt may be intact, but is it turning in unison with everything else.It may have stripped the teeth.hth

So, you've had a compression test carried out and there is no compression in any cylinder?

What results did both parts of the compression test give?

"Flashing oil light came on engine lost power will not start.no loud engine noise prior "

Engine runs out of oil, engine broken, either valves seized or pistons broken or both (valves hit pistons?) camshaft pulleys keyways break so cambelt rotates - or as suggested cambelt strippped.

No compression as valves seized open/holes in pistons..

Perm any of the above as an answer.

My trusted independent has seen an Audi seized for lack of oil supply even though sump was full.

Reason? Only 5mm clearance between oil pump intake and floor of sump, 4mm layer of sludge due to infrequent oil and filter changes.

(Not sure this applies to all models, however)

I think USA owners who used mineral oil may have had similar problems where the sump oil capacity was relatively low.

Sludge is far more common with lower specification oil, eg mineral rather than full synthetic.

US owners seem to be obsessed with using the lowest grade of oil possible but then accepting they need to change it every 3-5,000 miles.

It does rather sound as though valves/lifters are the least of the OP's problem in this case.

4mm layer of sludge due to infrequent oil and filter changes.

Presumably the habit of sucking old oil out through a tube down the dipstick hole rather than draining it (and any sludge) via the sump plug plays its part here.

My thoughts too, not helped by silly service intervals aimed at wooing the fleet market at the expense of used car buyers after the short new warranty has expired.

The OP has admitted on another thread to the car being driven fifteen miles with the oil light on. They then suggested the cambelt may have broken. They're now suggesting a valve lifter problem.

Clutching at straws?

There are times when you can only feel sympathy for the poor vehicle..:-)

That thread did come to mind, but hadn't clocked it was the same OP. Engine will be well and truly wrecked then.

On the previous thread he said he'd been offered a replacement motor for £1900. That could've been done by now.

I feel for the car too!
