High torque petrol - High Torque petrol engines / cars - quaywilly

I like diesel engines, with low rev torque, having driven Audi 1.9 for some years. But I do few miles now, so which petrol car do I choose for similar power at low revs? Budget is not high, so Chevy V8 is not a choice!

Most of VAGs turbo petrol engines fit the bill. They favour small turbos which spool at low RPM (in fact the turbo petrols have more torque below 1500 RPM than comparable diesels). The 1.2 TSI is comparable to the 1.6 TDI CR in terms of power. The 1.4 TSI will excees the performance of most variants of 1.9 TDI, but check for timing chain issues...

I was a passenger in a Fiesta recently that had the 1l Ecoboost engine. I was amazed by the low down torque from this little 3 cylinder engine. It seemed to run out of puff in the higher gears as the speed rose but considdering it was only 1l was to be expected. We did a trip of 150 miles mostly motorway, at 70/75mph when possible & it returned 50mpg on the computer. The 3 cylinder engine had a nice offbeat growl at lower revs. I've always had diesels for the last 30 years but will be keeping an eye on the reliability of these small turbo petrols for my next car.

Mitsi's 2.4 4 pot as fitted to our Outlander fits the bill nicely, as probably would most petrol engines 600cc or above per cyl.

MB supercharged engines and Volvo/Saab turbo petrols have some serious torque too.

Fuel consumption is the problem, hence LPG converted petrol being the lateral thinkers viable alternative to Diesel power.

Most tractable petrol car i ever owned was an FD Ventora (Victor with Cresta 3.3 straight six engine), that car would pull cleanly from 10mph in overdive top to around 120 without a murmer.
