BMW X5 - Comprehensive warranty - Branksome

I have a BMW X5 3.0 diesel, just coming up to its fifth birthday. I got a quote for BMW Insured Warranty Comprehehsive cover for next year, and it quoted £926.71 for a year with £100 excess for a car with 50,000 miles, but said to log in to the BMW warranty site for an exact quote. I did, and entered my mileage which is 68,355. The quote soared to £1491. That's around 50% hike for 18,000 extra miles with a diesel. I would have thought reading Honest John on diesels and short journeys that a car with 68,000 in five years should be in better condition than one with 50,000.

Is this extra 50% justified? Is it worth it anyway? My car has always done a 100 mile each way journey once or twice a week, and around town I use my wife's Suzuki Splash for all short journeys.

Would you insure an aging BMW X5 for this money I certainly would not a gearbox fault could cost many thousands never mind other expensive parts in this complicated car.By the way how are BMW supposed to know how you use it?

Only you can answer the question 'is it justified'.

You know how its been serviced and by whom, you know how its been driven and by whom.

If its been driven well and serviced properly....and i don't mean every 2 years or 20k miles between oil changes despite what is recommended in the comic...then i'd save the money.

Its a quality car and if treated well should give another 100k miles without a murmer, your use is as good as anyones.

You'd need to check EXACTLY what's covered in the warranty and what they would count as 'wear and tear', in order to decide if it's worth it or not. Also what the conditions are for the warranty to be valid (paying the premium is unlikely to be the only condition).

My innate cynicism suggests to me that any fault you tried to claim on would be put down to wear & tear.

Or "consequential damage" is another favourite mentioned before around these parts.

e.g. hose splits, that's a wear and tear item. Catastrophic overheating caused by loss of coolant lunches the cylinder head, that's consequential damage from the hose failure.

Payout = 0.

I'd expect BMW to be a bit better than most on warranty issues if you're buying the manufacturers insurance product especially at that price. Plus they have a decent reputation for usually doing the right thing at least they have done for others in my family and a work colleague when I would have expected little or no cover.

it is still expensive though and you could "risk' not covering it knowing the way you've looked after it and how it has been driven will reduce the risk. Do you use or know an independent to service it? If so they'll be knowledgeable about long term reliability and any common age related problems and costs.

The BMW warranty is actually very good - which is why it is expensive. It can also be extended indefinately - as long as the warranty has never been broken the car is still eligible for one. There are, for example, some old E39 M5's about which the warranty has been kept up on which are worth thousands more than examples which haven't.

At the end of the day it is an insurance policy and a calculated risk. You could just put the same money away for potential bills and you may well come out ahead, you might not.
