Hi!

If you had enough money which luxury car would you buy and why?

Maybach, Rolls-Royce, BMW, Bentley, Porsche ...

I'm more interested in the reasons. Not only from the technical point of view but also personal feelings and opinions?

In what universe is a BMW something exclusive and luxurious?

luxurious cars - Ed V

He said 'luxurious', not exclusive.

He said 'luxurious', not exclusive.

To phrase Jamie's question correctly then - "In what universe is a BMW something luxurious?"

Sorry Jamie, I've started agreeing with you lately - my senility must be setting in !

luxurious cars - Ed V

5 stars almost without exception acroos the range, reviews which include (I assume) quietness, comfort, reliability, quality of construction. The fact the they are affordable enough to be somewhat less than exclusive doesn't mean they are any less 'luxurious' than a Bentley / RR / Bugatti or whatever. We know Jamie meant 'I hate BMW's success and people with company cars in their 30s/40s.....don't we?

Possibly a Porsche Boxter if I thought I could get away with not looking like I had just had an early mid-life crisis!

Why?

1.) It's supoosed to be wonderful to drive.

2) you can still get a manual version

3.)The engine is only just powerful enough for the car

4.) Understated design and styling. I don't want to look like a premier league footballer thanks (and living in Cheshire this is a consideration!)

I think I too would opt for a Porsche, but probably the 911, but only on the basis that if you're going that far, stopping at a Boxster seems like pulling out too soon.

I like the 911 looks the best of the Porsches.

I like the idea of quality construction and materials.

In a perfect world, I'd buy the new one for its quieter engines and soundproofing, but looking like one from about 1995.

Nothing modern catches my eye, really. Given that sort of money, I'd get a fully-sorted Series 2 Interceptor with the high-compression 383cui motor (and series III alloys) from Cropredy Bridge, and still have change from £40K.

To my mind, no other car has managed to combine elegance and brutishness so well.

Landcruiser Amazon 200, but i'd import a Far East (UN) spec model without the air suspension and spec a live front axle.

I like total reliability and solid engineerin, LC's have them in spades, Toyota deserve the business due to their unbeatable customer care.

Might have a Toyota Century too, complete with lace curtains.

Jaguar xj, the proper one with the four round headlights!

New Jaguar XKR. Beautiful.

It's all a matter of taste and relativity. Personally I find my F-i-L's A6 luxurious because it is so comfortable and the seats look and feel posh, but some people find those Merc G-Wagens to be luxurious, or an Overfinch. I find those tacky!!

How about a Duesenberg?

luxurious cars - TeeCee

Mk1 Jaguar E-Type roadster.

That's been my "if money were no object" car for years.

The reasons are simple. Great to drive and every time I see one I salivate uncontrollably.

'luxury' - 'a state of great comfort'.

That rules out all virtually all Porsches and any other car with 'sports' suspension, an audible engine and rubber bands for tyres. Probably a Lexus hybrid comes close, but I've never been in one.

John, I agree. If that's the definition of luxury, only a Rolls or a Bentley will do. People may prefer the firmer ride of a German prestige make, but that's a separate virtue - not really luxury..

A keen chauffeur with a love of cars and his own private collection that he wanted to show off to me, while I day dreamt in the back, my mind on the thighs of the yoong spanish girl he was ferrying me to.

I'd have a Lexus of some description. My days of wanting noisy fast cars are gone.

I have only one 'money no problem' car wish.....

Bristol!

Ten years ago I'd have the Fighter II.

But now my bones ache, I have to consider getting out of the thing...so one of the others must do instead.

Nowt flash, cannot be bothered with gizmos. Just pure quality.

For me it would probably be the Bentley Continental GT.

A used one isn't a million miles out of sight, but still hard to justify a spend like that on a car.

How luxurious is the Phaeton? One year old with 7,000 miles for £26k looks a bargain compared to MBs and BMWs of similar spec.

Luxury is not only a comfort, speed and price but also the overal experiance with the car, with the dealer, reputation of the brand, satisfaction of owning.

For me sport cars are not luxurious, because there is not so much space and are uncomfortable.

Bentley or Royce are definately luxurious cars!!!

Some examples of the hottest luxury cars in 2013.

If you want to look like a football player.

If you want to look like a football player.

But that's models based on the VW Phaeton or BMW parts bin !

Real Rolls-Royces and proper Bentleys from Derby and Crewe are definitely luxury - is anything else ?

luxurious cars - daveyjp
As is said. You never own a Rolls, you simply look after it before passing it to the next keeper. That for me is why they are top of the pile.

But the badge-engineered BMW version simply doesn't have the heritage that Crewe-built Rolls-Royces had - and the big Bentleys still have.

The Arnage V8 prices are almost within grasp so I could soon be tempted.

luxurious cars - ewekoc

It is not about whether you will own these cars, cuz most of the poeple on the street or even here cannot afford either Bentley or Roys Rolls. It is about ahy your want to have it .

If you want to look like a football player

I think football players are more associated with sport cars. I mean look for example at this at this link. Most of them own porsche or ferrari, just to take a ride around the city and show how much money they have.

Of course with personal feelings in the mix it is all subjective. In my younger days as a 'man about town', circa 1970-1975, I had a TR5 then a Porsche 911. Both were enjoyable cars and surprisingly good for everyday use. I suppose now I would not consider them luxurious or comfortable, but at the time they appeared to be. They did though, have the desired effect on the damsels!! Although I would still like a 911 again I think I would plump for a new Bentley today. Luxurious, swift and comfortable to the highest degree. Nice thread. Cheers Concrete

I had a previlage to drive (or actually I was driven) a real ''luxurious car'' only once during my business trip in Germany a time ago and that was an amazing feeling sitting inside this car. I enjoyed every minute during this great ride and now understand why all people are so excited about it. The interior covered with leathe, very comfortable sits, minibar and just the great feeling alone. That was Mercedes S-class :)

I worked in Cologne in Germany in 1974 for 6 months and drove there in my 911. Ford had a facility nearby and a lot of their engineers were British. I uses to mix with them in the local bars and they always wanted to swap a drive of the latest version of the Capri V6 for drive of my 911. Occasionally I would and was always disappointed with the Capri yet they were always so excited with the 911. Happy days, long gone. Cheers Concrete

Grand Marquis?

Is there a punchline to that one?

luxurious cars - RT

Grand Marquis?

Mercury Grand Marquis - sibling of the Ford Crown Victoria - I doubt that Bentley or Rolls-Royce regard it as competition.

North America seems to equate our Premium with their Luxury.
