Pubs to open at service stations on motorways: to serve from 8am - what can go wrong?

From a daily newspaper.

If I drive elsewhere in the world i can get a drink while i am eating, and am trusted to be a grown up!

I just don't see the point - if only because it'll encourage coach loads of drunken hooligans to top-up their alcohol levels on their way to wherever they're going.

They will have a target clientelle in mind. Most likley it will be business travellers and families. They may or may not welcome excursion and holiday coaches - probably OK as they're running to a timetable and can be required to pre-book.

If football or rugby coaches using it to 'tank up' become a problem they'll quickly be banned.

Petrol stations have been selling alcohol for years, since many of them became 'express' supermarkets.

The vast majority of pubs, except inner city ones, offer parking for patrons.

I dont see the point of this thread.....

And cars can carry passengers who are not driving!

Those creating a hoo-hah over this need to explain something.

What's the difference between a pub in a motorway service area and one just off the motorway with a large sign in a farmer's field saying; "XYZ Inn. Family friendly, food, beer garden. Next exit, 750yds."?

Quite common and the distinction escapes me with regard to the "concerns" raised.

OK, so what will it do for the quality of food on offer? I don't drink so the ability of getting alcohol is wasted on me.

Just another thing for Brake to moan about!

Correct.
Something else for Brake to emotionally blackmail the world about.

How it must be to view the world from the bubble known as Brake.

You could also go into the pub for a meal instead of the god-awful muck served at most of the service stations, its not always about the booze!

This is idiotic.

When M ways were first opened and the franchaise given to service providers as I recall the sale of alcohol was to be taboo.

Who use the areas? People in cars. They spend millions in propaganda about drink and drive and in the proposal they seem to encourage it.

When I use the M way I do not want to be in company with two pinters belting alongside me at 70- 80 mph. No thanks.

What about passengers you say? Let them take a bottle and sit in the back and get wellied as much as they want as long as the driver is cold SOBER.

From one who in the past has had to scrape up after drink effected drivers and seen the devastation accidents can cause to others.

Not sure if I read the original report correctly, but if the chain doing this is JD Wetherspoons, hopefully they'll be better staffed than their normal pubs, as they're normally so busy (especially at lunchtimes) that you sometimes can wait 30-45mins from order to receiving the food.

I think if they keep staff levels up and cater to the "family/businessman audience" (more of a restaurant like "Beefeaters" or similar) then that would work, IF the food was fine (see "Little Chef" [over-priced for poor quality fare IMO] to how NOT to do it) and they actively encouraged drivers to purchase non-alcoholic drinks. After all, the existing "eateries" at the service stations sell booze.

Since Wetherspoons is one of the cheaper chains when it comes to pub food I shouldn't get your hopes up that food quality will be any better than Little Chef or a conventional motorway services.

Have Weatherspoons said what their pricing policy in this establishment will be?

If they charge 'normal' rates (as Maccy D's do on the M/way) then they'll be extraordinary value. Was in their Sheaf Island in Sheffield last Saturday. Two meals a pint and a large coke for a few pence over £11.

Clientele mostly families with either young children or, like me, on end of Semester duty for Uni students.

Might have been different if there was a home fixture at Brammall Lane.

Hang on, every Wetherspoons I know of is substantially populated by 'all day drinker' types. How is this going to work unless they bus them in every morning?

I don't see a problem with motorway services selling alcohol, but the police should pay particular attention to the possiblity of drivers leaving the services who might have been drinking.

"Semester" ?

Ye Gods, Bromptonaut. Is that yet another example of creeping Americanisation? We called it a "Term" in my day.

I thought that we were supposed to be becoming more European?

Degree is history and politics and includes several modules on US and taught by Yanks. Use on my part was subconscious, suspect it's invaded via the Uni's own publications.

We called it a "Term" in my day.

A 'term' isn't synonymous with 'semester'; trimester would be the American equivalent. You'll be glad to know hear that terms are very much alive at some of Britain's Universities!
