Lexus IS - Whats an Affordable luxury car? - Darquan

Hi, I'm moving on from my golf and am trying to work out what car to get. Budget under £6500 and £330 per month looking for something comfortable with really good interior. BMW 3 series I think is too expensive, been thinking about the Lexus IS250 but it has very mixed reviews,....any ideas on these cars or other appropriate cars?

'Luxury' is a very loosely defined word. If you're after comfort, an elderly Citroen BX will out perform a top end 3 series. Stiff suspensions and low profile tyres might make for the ultimate driving machine, but not the ultimate in comfort.

Yes thats true, IS are high quality compact cars where durability reliability and good customer aftercare were and are streets ahead of the competition...well except for the Diesel IS which is the fly in the ointment, manual only and a 4 pot tractor engine, not a great combination whoevers badge adorns or country of origin.

My uncle had 3 x of them and a 4th which was more on estate car..................he was an undertaker. These replaced 4 x Rolls Royces which apparently were sold for £250 each circa 1955............the current fleet are MB E class.

Exactly, what is classed as Luxury? This is quite subjective. BMW, Audi, Lexus etc do not tend to market their cars as Luxury but as Prestige. What the hell does Prestige mean? Is this subjective again?

Blindfolded (or de-badged if you get my drift), who could tell apart a Mondeo from its German rivals? Or a Lexus from a top of the range Vauxhall?

Proper cars are driven via the correct wheels, those who can't tell the difference should and probably do drive round in automotive washing machines.

If you're going to spend £6k on a Lexus and aren't too worried about fuel consumption get a LS, not an IS.

The LS is far better value used than an IS and way more of a luxury car.

£6k should get you a faclift (late 2003 on) LS430 with 80-120k miles (condition and history is more important than exact mileage) in decent condition if you shop around.

That'll be a VAnden Plas 1300, or Vanden Plas Allegro? Certainly not a Ghia anything! Nowt wrong with washing machines...or...washing-machines-to-be? To me, a seat is a seat.... as long as I don't have to drive too far with my knees in my ears....

Er no. The correct answer is "all of them". Having had the pleasure of living with a 4x4 car for a while not too long ago, nothing else is as good when it comes to traction and roadholding.

A colleague had one a few years ago, brand new as a company car. It was the diesel. It was a nail from the moment it was delivered. It had a new engine, new door locking mechanisms and new front seat electrics. A new radiator and the list went on. He now drives a BMW efficient dynamics.

I would say at least 90% of RWD car drivers would not have a clue whether they were driving a FWD, RWD or AWD car. Apart from the give away of the transmission tunnel that is! The differences only really become noticeable when you start to push the car or the weather intervenes.

And pay a prmium of 30% for the badge.

And get stiffed for maintenance and repair bills.

Yeah because no pensioner in a Citroen has ever proven to be a bad driver.

My S-Type handled snow surprisingly well. I wouldn't have taken it out when it was 2 foot high but with snow on the road it was okay.

I may pay a premium to own it but it's not all badge.

I've also blotted it's Jaguar main dealer history book by taking it to Steve down the road.

Various dealers are offering the different models of used cars at different prices. In that, We can choose them according to our specifications and budget.

(Link to Florida dealer website removed. They seem to speak an interesting form of pidgin-English patois in Florida, judging by the above.)
