My polo was very lumpy during idle, it was due a service and when the plugs were changed No 4 was sooty. The mechanic plugged his computer in and no fault codes came up and suggested changing the coil pack, this made no difference and he also did a compression test and all was ok. Has anybody any ideas as to where to look next.

Thanks.

If you use cheap supermarket fuel stop doing so and use branded stuff. Better still use super high octane unleaded.

Why only on one plug though ?

Because lack of octane is really going to be causing an idle problem! Honestly! Octane rating is not synonymous with quality. Nothing wrong with the fuel.

If you've looked at spark and not found any answers, then try fuelling. Switch the injectors round and see if the problem moves to a different cylinder. If it does it;s likely to be an injector fault.

just to close the loop, it turned out to be a fuel injector.

+1. Notice how BP & Shell may have fixed prices.
