A hybrd priced competitvly.

Now that would be seriously tempting.

Ah, but that it was a Daihatsu.

Badge engineering at its worst. VW group wannabees.

I think with all the financial and natural disasters that have befallen the Japanese, it will be a long time before they have relatively small independent car manufacturers again who make something a little bit different.

Suzuki and Daihatsu used to be quite innovative.

Now they are merely on the margins.

Toyota have had a controlling interest in Daihatsu since 1999 - so they aren't independent.

I dont think it matters if their indepebdent if there selling what are often expensive toyota models at more realistic prices.

Nothing wrong with simply re-badging the best company out there, and certainly nothing wrong with selling identical cars at a more value based pricing structure.

I was aware of that fact, I simply meant that there are precious few independents out there and even fewer who have the financial stability to innovate.

Suzuki and Daihatsu used to be quite innovative.

Also the cars that came out of that Daihatsu plant in Kobe were second to none for build quality.

So Daihatsu rebadge Toyotas and Perodua rebadge Daihatsus? It is a strange world.

Which is the nub of the problem - it is the strength of the Japanese Yen which has made Japanese built cars expensive. This combined with low sales makes it uneconomic. Honda have the same issue with the Accord and Toyota with the Previa and Urban Cruiser.

Daihatsu have also withdrawn from Australia and, this year, from New Zealand, for similar reasons.

Can't see them returning to Europe unless it is possibly as a Toyota budget brand to compete with Dacia and Datsun, and then only if thd cars are assembled outside Japan (somewhere like their new plant in Indonesia) and if they share Toyota's distribution network.

One will be more reliable than the other....

One will be more reliable than the other....

Didn't the Ford era Jaguar XJ top the JD Power survey two years running or something?

All these discussions over reliability are hugely tedious as the fact is 90% of modern cars are fine, but for what it's worth I've had mine for nearly 2 years and it's been faultless.
