Why do people still buy personalised number plates - unthrottled

A fool and money are easily parted.

Why did people buy Dyson vacuum cleaners? because Dyson convinced them that their existing, perfctly functional hoovers were somehow inadequate and that their lives would be improved immeasurably by purchasing a vacuum cleaner with no bag.

Result: Dyson is a multi millionaire; his customers aren't!

In answer to this old question, no-one seems to have remarked on the apparent willingness to contribute to the DVLA's coffers - who sometimes cold-call or Email people offering them poor imitations of their name. But I suppose if one has more cash than one knows how to spend, one may waste it however one cares ....

A Dyson was/is far better than those crappy bagged vacuums, but a personlised plate is just a re-arangement of letters of a piece of plastic. A better analogy would be a HOOVER that costs updward of £150 more because it says 5UCK3R on it instead of HOOVER.

Its even worse when they buy peronalised plates then move the digits around and put black capped screws to make something even different. Is the UK the only country that has this farcical trade.

The most tedious collection of posts I've seen on this forum .

Number plates ,if you own a 3 series BMW ,you own one of perhaps 300'000 3 series registered in the uk .

You chose the metallic colour ,the leather interior ,the different alloys that you wanted .They all cost you extra .Whats wrong with spending £500 ,to make your BMW stand out by having your initials on the car .

Dyson vacuum cleaner ,dyson caught other manufacturers sleeping ,for twenty years the best selling vacuum cleaner was the Hoover junior .it hardly changed in twenty years .

The dyson is a far superior cleaner in all aspects except weight . Design, vacuum power ,tool use are all superior .What a pity the dyson washing machine wasn't so innovative .

At last, some sense. Perhaps we should start commenting on people spending money on cigarettes, beer etc. Also the language of some of posts have been offensive. Let's respect others please

So? Does the fact that it is common make it any less of a car? Do people need crutches to make them feel unique or special?

Btw: sorry, but the Dyson is junk. You won't see them in hotels.

Barnstorming investment.

They can lower your insurance premium.

Also, a mate has two, because he finds them amusing. And is amused people get het up about the reasons why people buy them.

Another mate has found his, apparently anonymous plate, is worth £1500. He delighted as he has just been made redundant!!!

( Btw: sorry, but the Dyson is junk. You won't see them in hotels. )

A pointless comparison ,the industrial market is tiny compared to the domestic market that dyson dominates .

Think about it ,dyson sells at a premium price compared to its competitors .

Buyers ,particularly ones like us who are buying for a second time ,wouldn't continue to buy if the product wasn't superior .

( So? Does the fact that it is common make it any less of a car? Do people need crutches to make them feel unique or special? )

Unless we're incredibly dull ,we all like to stand out from the crowd ,we dress different , style our hair differently ,at least those of you that have hair do .

Number plates ,even owning a prestige car ,like a Mercedes or a BMW ,is how we demonstrate our individuality .

As an example I often hear potential customers saying I would never own a skoda .its the reverse of the above .People love the individual badge or marker that makes them feel special . Skoda as a badge just doesn't make them feel good .

As car enthusiasts,we know that negative skoda feelings are illogical ,they're generally considered a quality product at the right price .

However car buying is part logic and part emotion ,we need our egos flattering ,by having the right car in the right colour ,with the right number plate .

That's why we don't buy cars in flat green ,dark brown and with unadorned steel wheels . Cars and everything about them are not just an alternative to public transport .

Let's be thankful that we live in a country where we are free to make the choice. Personally I wouldn't have one - I prefer to spend the money on a better car - but each to their own.

It really isn't a moral issue, or one to get angry about.

It really isn't a moral issue, or one to get angry about.

Not at all! Perhaps the anonymity of a normal number plate isn't always a good thing. If my number plate was my name, would I drive differently?! Maybe....!

The industry surrounding cherished plates is a bit depressing, but the concept is harmless enough.

Why do people still buy personalised number plates - jamie745

Some are less obvious. My car originally had a private plate which was just two letters, 54 (year of birth) and the three initials. I didnt realise for a year that its a 56 plate car.

Why do people still buy personalised number plates - A3 A4

Personally I bought one (£250) ten years ago to stop my car from ageing, which for the 5 years the model was current it did. With the introduction of six monthly updates of registration plates your considerable investment can date very quickly.

I've never pratted around with the spacing or fonts as its purely a J prefix one digit and my intitials. I still have it, a dealer will readily swap it as part of the deal on a replacement vehicle.

Maybe the thread might be be better titled "Why do people get so het up about personalised number plates?"

I don't want one but I couldn't care less if someone else does have one. Up to them isn't it?

I'm far more irritated by people who wear 3/4 length trousers and football jerseys as leisure wear ! Although of course that's equally their choice isn't it?

:-)

AB, I totally agree that the clothing you mention is a fashion disaster - as is most sportswear, especially when worn by those to whom active sport is obviously remote - i.e. the overweight.

As for personalised plates, I must be especially thick, because half the time I don't "get" them. In the article referenced by the OP, I read someone has driven miles and paid £8,400 for GO12DON. Apparently everyone is supposed to read that as GORDON.

You what?

But then, I'd rather have a nice house with a tatty car than the other way round, contrary to what lot of people seem to think near where I live and, I suspect, in the world at large.

But, as has been said, it's their money. But to me it's just weird.

Why do people still buy personalised number plates - Alby Back

Well, for the avoidance of being accused of hypocrisy, I confess I had a personal plate for donkey's years. It was bought for me as a surprise Christmas present one year and in fairness I was amused enough by it to be grateful, and indeed used it on my cars for a long time. However, eventually, I just tired of it and sold it.

I always did though have this nagging doubt that it was, in a way, a bit like using hair dye or wearing a wig. ( Neither of which I have ever been tempted to try by the way ! ) In other words, for every person it might have impressed that there might have been more who would have not been quite so generous...

The practice though harms no-one and pleases some so who can reasonably object? Like I mentioned above, if you want garden gnomes or a red front door or a personal plate then thankfully it's up to you whether you do or not and is nobody's concern but your own.

This all of course hinges on whether one chooses to care much about the opinions of others which as the years advance I'm pleased to say I find excercises my mind rather less than perhaps it once did.

People are happy to pay for "fun" in all manner of diverse forms not all of which appeal to everyone and i'm glad that has not yet been banned.

Majority of personal plates mean absolutely nothing to anyone but the owner. The worst ones are the numbers used to stretch the lettering into a possible word. And they are too much money just to have a non standard plate.

As to Dysons. I've had one and the suction was poor. The thing didn't last long enough yet was pricey to buy. When I took it to the tip, the large skip that I had to dispose of it in was full of Dysons of all shapes. Next time you go, have a look. Which? doesn't rate them in their tests, I've never seen a Dyson in the top 3.

Displaying personal plates is probably seen by the displayer as something giving their mode of transport a little prestige. It's much the same as the person who buys a BMW, Audi or Merc for the same reason. No one really takes any notice, the feeling of the prestige is all in the mind of the owner. Much more worrying is the mindset of the person who thinks the owner of the plate or vehicle has a problem or is demented in some way.

We have on on our Berlingo. It's been in the family ever since it was issued out by Birmingham Council in 1951. The last two digits are 21 and it was on a motorbike given to my Mother in law on occasion of her 21st birthday. We inherited it when she stopped driving ten years ago.

As my forename is Simon I could hanker after on that spelled my name properly but not even if I won the Euromillions.........

As fro the folks that re-position, use bolts etc book should be thrown. I regularly pass a pick up with the apparent reg of RIFLE. The first letter is not really an R.

Not sure if he means it has a magic power to stop depreciation, or stop the need for servicing, or perhaps just they dont rust or break with these plates on.

I trust all owners of personalised number plates realise that Capital Gains Tax rules apply when they are sold on.

I have a personalised vacuum cleaner. It's called Henry.

Why do people still buy personalised number plates - veryoldbear

And I have a bagless number plate.

Why do people still buy personalised number plates - HandCart

I put the owners of NON-ORIGINAL registration marks in three buckets:

1) The owner is ‘okay’ if the plate is amusing enough to raise a smile or a chuckle from me.

2) The owner is ‘okay’ if a pretty-standard reg number (like one of the “A”-prefix plates) is being used on an older Audi/BMW/Merc model (their shapes tend to evolve relatively slowly) so that it’s difficult to pin-down the actual age of the car. This makes it easier outside the school for a mum’s car to be ‘acceptable’ to the other mums who bought theirs brand new. This elicits a smile+nod+wink from me: It’s like “I don’t actually want to be a member of your club, but I’ve suckered you into accepting me anyway – ha!”

3) All other cases: The owner is simply a show-off, plain and simple.

And the really annoying ones are those printed in a non-regulation font: The rest of us have to abide by a law which facilitates our plates to be read by ANPRs, so why aren’t you doing so? I can only conclude that you are both pretentious AND a criminal.

Why do people still buy personalised number plates - Bromptonaut

Odd fonts still trigger speed cameras and can be read if, even if not correctly interpreted, by ANPR.

Mis reads are referred to the Mk1 human eyeball which can read all fonts.

Why do people still buy personalised number plates - Happy Blue!

I once bought a Volvo S80 from the estate of a deceased neighbour whose daughter lived around the corner. The family are good friends and the original plate on the car was fairly unusual. The car itself was similar to others in the area (there are/were several metallic blue S80s around at the time).

I bought the car and replaced the plate with S80 *** (*** = my initials) so that the family would not feel the loss of their father each time they saw the car. I know it was appreciated and when I sold the car, the plate went with it.

We are not all prats, but I couldn't be bothered having one now.

Quite the best number plate I have seen was on a vehicle parked in Brighton Marina. It read 000700 and was, of course fitted to a white Aston Martin. I thought it could not be a real number, but something fitted for perhaps a publicity photo. However I did post details on Honest John and some one assured me that the numer was an official legal number!

I think the story was that when the letters were first allocated to local authorities, they left out (among others) OO and WC. In the early 1960s, before the suffix letters came in, OO and WC were snapped up, I think by Essex who had run out of numbers.
