I would have agreed with unthrottled in any case, but if Jamie also agrees it must be true. :-)

Cast a look to your right Jamie. Someone's plugging Warranty Direct under the banner of 'News'!

The article ominously wishes 'good luck...' to the self-insured, whereas I'd wish 'good luck' to anyone attempting to extract payment from these companies.

It's well worth paying for a warranty if you're quite happy to pay a few hundred pounds for a piece of paper which isn't worth the value of the ink that's printed on it!

I prefer trying to buy a decent car which won't go wrong and if it does go wrong, getting it fixed for a reasonable fee. Maybe I've been lucky but I'm yet to buy a total dud.

I think we've become dulled to the propaganda of the snake oil salesman, whether he be wearing a politicians grey suit, or an ernest media trendy stressing todays crusade or a hard up/greedy celebrity flogging loans or any old rubbish on the telly, or indeed any scheme to extract our money with more get outs than you could shake a stick at.

Listen hard those at the back....''''we don't believe you anymore''' get it, we've been lied to all of our lives, you stole our pensions, you gave our country away without a shot being fired whilst good men lie cold in graves all over the world long before their time defending the place, you took us into wars on lies and smoke and mirrors.

They lie about everything in order to gain our votes or trust or money, they have no honour.

Maybe its me, but i don't believe a word 'they' say any more.

Warranties are just another way to extract our money.

I like wot Gord writ!

A warranty is only ever any good if you are one of those unlucky few who has a horendous fault that costs £££s and the warranty picks up the tab.
From what I hear most people have a hard time getting repairs paid for and often end up with no car for some period of time.

Personally I think that if you would have bought a warranty, you are better off putting the monthly fee in a simple savings account. Whenever you need a new widget, simply dip into that account to pay for it. That way, when summatt goes wrong you get your car / wash machine / boiler in for repair straight away - no waiting, minimum amount of time without your machine. Job jobbed.

Even better Cyd(P) put it in Premeium Bonds..you just might win a prize and you can get

your hands on your money in a couple of days on line.I've done this for years instead of signing up for useless guarantees which they tell me will give me peace of mind!

Peace of mind has nothing to do with the cost of repairing cars, washing machines or anything else I can assure you!

Also I have won a few small prizes with the PBs

Has anyone here successfully claimed on one of these non-manufacturer warranties?

Has anyone here successfully claimed on one of these non-manufacturer warranties?

Yes, once, in 2006 on a 4 year old Citroen C5.

Bought from a non Citroen dealer, so car had only a 3 month standard warranty. I bought a year's Warranty Direct cover (can't remember the cost, between £200 and £300).

A few months later, the passenger side central door locking failed, claimed successfully and effectively got my money back.

Had to pay an excess of I think £50 though.

Having said that, I wouldn't bother buying any warranty these days.

Just buy a simple car without loads of gizmos. That'll be the Dacia or a secondhand Jappo.
