Vauxhall Corsa - vauxhall corsa 1.0 twinport (engine problems) - blakejkaren

I need some advice as i get the impression that im being taken advantage of by garages, which does not surprise me as im not technically clued up on the issues with my car.

I had a full service completed on my car and it was due to have its MOT a couple of months later. Up until then i had had no problems with it. After servicing it started to cut out often and i finally had it picked up by a garage, where they told me the head gasket and timing chain had gone, i would therefore be better off getting a new engine than having it fixed. Due to ill health i have had to reduce the number of hours i work so i cant afford some of the prices i have seen for a 1.0 engine.....what would others advise? As my car is on finance i am stuck with it, it has now been off the road for almost a year : (

How old is the car, and how many miles has it done? How soon AFTER the service did the problems start to appear? Has this particular garage always serviced the car?

At first glance, the symptoms of 'cutting out' could be caused by many things, so a diagnosis of failed head gasket and timing chain sounds drastic and expensive.

Any additional info you can provide would help give us a fuller picture.

if your finance is half way through you can return the car to them & have no extra cost & have nohing else to pay ;)

look at your terms & conditions because most finance do this, i've done it my self when i had problem after problem with an MG i had

I'd get someone else to have a look, ask friends and family if they know any garages they trust. Mobile techs can be quite good, more in it to do a job of work and get some honest cash, compared to landed concerns who view their customers as a money mine.

A 1 litre Corsa ain't rocket science, I reckon you'd get an honest appraisal for £30 for an hours work from anyone with a few spanners, a laptop and an op-com in the van. Call a few up and tell them how you fear getting ripped off and just want to know whats wrong with it.

Did you ever remember to get the oil changed?
