Toyota Yaris - New diesel Yaris worth a punt? - ReluctantSW

I have the chance to buy an 09 diesel Yaris from family member at a good price - £5,500 - the six gear version which I'm told has high spec and covered 39k. I currently drive venerable 02 Skoda fabia SDI which is a rock solid non-turbo diesel. The Skoda has given no problem but covered 160k so will need replacing in next couple of years. I had no plans to sell the Skoda and assumed I'd only get few hundred pounds given mileage. Does anyone have direct experience of the diesel yaris? If so is it worth snapping up and sacrificing the Skoda? I've read mixed comments on the fuel economy of the yaris and equally on the wisdom of investing in modern small diesels. I cover around 20k year, motorway and town driving. Any opinions much appreciated.

Ensure its got a full Toyota history and been serviced on time. (It's 10,000 miles or 1 year). I did 40k in one over 18 months. No issues at all, driven hard it returned 52 mpg over that period on mostly motorway miles. I now have a 2.0 d4d auris and its also reliable.

If you reckon the Skoda isn't worth much and is going well why change it? You are going to part with 5 grand plus for a car to do the same job as the Skoda seems to be doing well!

I think there is an implicit question in the original post, namely how long is an 11 year old diesel Yaris likely to remain trouble free. My two previous cars (Nissan, Ford) starting falling to pieces at ~10 years and 150,000 miles. In both cases rust was serious, and in one case the engine managment system went, and wheel bearings and the like were failing. I wonder how long the Yaris body will last? 20K miles a year is a lot.

My 10 year old Yaris diesel has had no major faults since I bought it 7.5 years ago.

The only replacement apart from tyres/oil and filters have been:

front ARB drop links.£25

Front disks and pads. £100

err.. that's it.
