VW golf 1.6 2006..... - Power failure.. - vwgolf06
Hi,

Car just had full service few weeks back... exhaust pipe replaced
60,000 mileage.... Not added much mileage since service.... Have experienced power failure....problem with power/acceleration... most noticable going uphill.... No warning lights on dashboard... No diagnostic codes.... Have been told both cats ie. whole exhaust system needs replacement..... Is it right that this wouldn't / couldnt have been noticed when service checks carried out..?...

How much of the exhaust has been replaced?Power loss can be caused by a blocked section of the exhaust system, and on these golfs it is usually the second cat, fitted below the floor.hth

Hi... thanks for reply.......a downpipe was replaced... nothing else...... are there tests/checks that can show whether only one cat is blocked.... Is it reasonable to try replacing one first.... Have been told need to replace front cat, centre section, rear cat and rear box.... sounds a lot.... do centre section and rear box need replacing automatically if cat does....?

The best method is to open the exhaust up at various points to establish which has the blockage .There is no need to replace the complete system.hth

Thanks... that was my thinking .....really appreciate your comments... .. Need to clarify what's been checked so far.... ..... If nothing coming up in diagnostics... would that mean sensor issues are ruled out ....

A blockage in the exhaust system usually does not flag any fault codes.Very much doubt it is a sensor issue.hth

Thanks again ... will see how things go tomorrow

One last question..... Is it ok to drive vehicle with blocked exhaust a short distance.... It was struggling on hill but ok on level........ could it cause further problems..

Difficult to say,but any blockage may cause the system before the restriction to overheat and cause future problems.Probably be ok on a short run, without too much load on the engine.hth

Have been told that the cat has broken up and damaged/ blocked the exhaust system....

When ECU throws more fuel it damages the cat.... too much fuel.....

Would appreciate any comments /view on this.....

Don't think so.An ecu throws more fuel in?In fact it is the reverse. If the engine control system detects a combustion problem,it shuts off the fuel to the offending cylinder so as not to damage the cat.A broken cat can be caused by impact dama ge,(speed humps etc)or a previous problem with ignition misfire due to faulty ignition coils(very common on these).hth

Thks..... need to get this checked over by different...... Would/could a broken up cat cause whole exhaust system to need replacing.......

Would there be any reason to consider that replacing a downpipe could have affected functionality of exhaust.....

Not totally sure what has been replaced, but usually on this model golf, the downpipe incorporates the first cat.Should not need to replace the whole system, but it does depend to what extent the cat has broken up.hth
