I have recently purchased a 10/60 reg Hyundai Sante Fe SUV. I have been reading with concern that the spare wheel is vulnerable to theft. This I believe is also an issue with The Kia Sorento and other Range Rover models as well as other SUV's. My solution was to by an ABUS Hardened chain in a fabric sleeve an thread this through the spare wheel and a space in the rear axle and secure the same with a good quality padlock. It was a fiddly and slightly dirty job, it took around 45 minutes, after I wrapped the padlock in bubble wrap and plastic bag to protect it from the elements. Hopefully this will deter thieves save for the most determined ones, hope this helps others.

Did exactly the same on my Hilux, hardened chain and serious padlock, through the wheel and over the chassis on the pick up.

On vehicles with externally mounted spare, I just ensure that the spare's a tin wheel with a part-worn tyre on it and thus not worth bothering to nick.

How dirty will you get and how long will it take to undo it if you need to fit it?
