Mondeo Clutch cost! - rgt1973

The clutch on my mk3 Mondeo is just about had it and have had a few quotes. Was wondering what sort of price I should be paying? Best price so far has been £420 inc. vat, parts and labour, but no DMF. Does this need to be done on the 1.8 petrol or will it be ok? Car has done 134000 miles and it is still on the original clutch!

False economy not to change the DMF at the same time as the clutch. In 12 months time you could be paying to have the job done again!

If its a 1.8 petrol I doubt if its got a DMF if it has (mine did not)you can switch it for a ordinary flywheel..

Price sounds quite good to me.

It should have a DMF (most petrols do) but if it is OK I can't see the point in replacing a perfectly OK DMF with another one unless you plan to keep the car for another 130k.

It is possible to test it for tolerance once removed and the mechanic should be able to judge whether it needs replacing.

Sure about that? I was under the impression DMFs were almost exclusively fitted to diesels?

Does anyone know of a definitive reference that lists those vehicles with a DMF? Perhaps HJ should do one?

I know for sure my Saab 9-3 does not have a DMF (2.0T) and would therefore assume the Vauxhall versions of this engine don't either.

A lot of petrols do, yes, certainly larger cars. Are you absolutely sure on the Saab? Maybe it depends on model year but 2002-2011 petrol 93's IIRC are fitted with a LUK DMF.

Yes, I'm sure. The 1.9 diesels have a DMF but not the petrols. The OE clutch was LUK as you say. Mines a 07 Aero 2.0T. The petrol engines have contrarotating balance shafts.

A 2.0t Aero should have a DMF, so if it hasn't then someone has removed it! I think maybe the base 1.8 had a solid flywheel (even though it is a 2.0) but the more powerful versions should have a DMF.

There is a load of uncessary fuss over DMF's - only a few badly designed ones go wrong and it tends to be on diesels. On most cars they outlive the car. Fortunately, most aren't even that expensive these days anyway.

It isn't a cheap job in terms of labour on Mondeo marks 1-3, as the front subframe has to be dropped before the gearbox can be moved, if I remember right. This pretty much doubles the workshop time.
