volkswagen camper 1.6 diesel 1985 - slow camper - martin.f

Hi,

I bought this camper a couple of years ago and have spent roughly 10K on all new interior, full respray and engine overall . My problem is going uphill I can only get to 25 and I live at number 65. No on a serious note it struggles going up hill - it is either screaming in 2nd or won't do 3rd, also maximum on the motorway is 40 according to the mechanic. It will only do 55 downhill on the motorway. Is this normal?

1.6 d piston + 5mm

1.6 d head gasket

fit cam bearings

strip check and rebuild to cam followers

reface valve set exhaust

re face inlet valves

shim valve solid cam followers

guide liner 8.0 mm 0.314"

These were remarkable slow vehicles when they were new a petrol would struggle to do 65 and the diesel had a top speed of 61mph they were official VW figures

If the timing is correct then there is not much more you can do perhaps check that the air flow is ok.You really need to take it to a proper VW specialist and let them give it a once over.
