My earliest post here seems to have been in July of 2003, though I seem to remember e-mailing HJ via the Daily Telegraph regarding additives to engine oil before that.

In life generally I believe it's a mistake to assume anything will go on for ever, but the loss of the HJ Back Room and all it represents in terms of accumulated knowledge and experience is a bitter pill to swallow.

The C 4 P forum is probably the closest relative to this one and I hope that every contributor here, but particularly the most helpful ones, will end up there.

For those interested, I have been a member of the other place ever since it started up, under various screen names. Currently I'm James Loveless.

I very much hope that for most of us, this will be "au revoir" and not "adieu", but whoever you are, please accept my thanks and very best wishes.

And no signing off like this would be complete without expressing thanks to the moderators, past and present, for helping to keep things civilised. There were times when we tested your patience.

After what appears to be about 23 years of membership and posting its goodbye from me.

Since then I've had 8 cars, wife has had 7, I estimate I've driven about 500,000 miles.

I didn't have a daughter, I now have a daughter who has been through 19 years of life, now finding her way, loves driving and more than happy with her 10 year old Swift which has given her real freedom over the summer.

I did pen a review of my wife's latest purchase, a 4 year old Yaris Hybrid, but never managed to post it.

It did break over the weekend, but a 12v battery disconnection reset the multitude of errors it showed on the motorway telling me to go the dealer!

Despite the ever increasing work to make owning a car and driving a miserable experience there are still great roads put there, enjoy them while you can!

Farewell all.

Dave

My regular runs into north Wales in the Pug 205 probably fit that description. Apart from a moderate increase in traffic and an almost blanket coverage of Welsh speed limits, it is much the same as 30 years ago.

All the best everyone, I wish you well in all your endeavours, motoring or otherwise.

From me too. I haven't joined up to the Other Place yet, but may give it a go soon. Hope to see old friends there.

Agree, seems sad that the forum is closing, but there are others.

I'd never heard of that "other place" before, though from a quick look there seem to be a fair number of familiar looking usernames. Perhaps I'll join up there as well.

There is also the other other place (the larger more commercial one involving Pistons) which I suspect at least some here post on as well. So hopefully there should still be somewhere to go for car related chat for a whole yet.

All the best everyone, I have enjoyed my time on this forum, a mistake to close it really. Hope to see you on the alternative site.

Wishing you all happy motoring for many years to come.

Best,

I have been a member for a very long time, I don't post often but do/did drop in regularly to benefit from the diverse and very useful posts here.

I was a member of the other place under a different username, I recollect it was set up when HJ was down for a period for refurbishment. I resigned my membership there after being roundly abused by a member who lived in Chile. He was kicked out as a result of his awful online behaviour. The irony is I may have to consider rejoining.

Thank goodness this place was always pleasant and polite, and at time spirited. I am grateful for all the help I have received and wish everybody, and especially the mods, well.

I too was abused/bullied by Mark. Bit of an enigma in that he was, on the one hand very intelligent and immensely knowledgeable, and on the other a bit of a nob.

It wasn't about principle, he actively sought to disagree. I recall a particular spat over a joke about the King's younger son.

The Mods were more than a wee bit slow in tackling him.

Sorry to see the forum closing down, even though I wasn't a frequent poster.

Always liked reading SLO's posts, particularly his experiences with EV's. Also found Ethan Edwards EV posts quite interesting too. Was looking forward to seeing how his MG4 works out. Will probably consider an EV when I next change.

Thanks to elekie&a/c doctor for giving advise on a couple of occasions.

Most importantly thanks to the various Mods the forum has had, without which the forum couldn't function.

Might sign up to the other side, but not at the moment.

Best of luck everyone.

Farewell to all.

I read the forum most days and enjoyed the advice and banter. Posted a few times but not recently.

Thanks to Moderators past and present for a sterling job

‘ May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.’

Cheerio everyone.. Not sure I'll sign up at the other place purely because it looks weird on my phone, which I use for this sort of thing (I'm not actually bad at spelling). I'll probably be bored and wash up there in about a week.

I've had the road rise up to meet me a few times, including once when I cycled off the end of Great Cumbrae while drunk and gazing up at the stars.(1971 or 72 I think)

It hurts

I may post some Vogon poetry as a farewell.

I am sorry to see this forum go. Thanks to the mods and all the knowledgable contributors especially SLO and eleciedoc. I have been on HJ since about 2004 or so. For all you old hands do you remember the Growler and his posts from the Philippines? Always a good laugh and he was sorely missed. I am trying to join the Car 4 site with mixed luck but seem to be making some progress thanks to help from Smokie. Hope to see the rest of you over there.

And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain

My friend, I'll say it clear
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain
I've lived a life that's full
I traveled each and every highway

I have joined the "other place" so hope to see you there.

Alternatively, if you have, or are interested in, a Toyota then TOC.
