Closure of Forum for New Postings from 30 September 2025
Hello all. We have some bad news. As of the 30th September 2025, the HJ Back Room Forum forum will close to new postings. From that date onward, it will remain available as a read-only archive.
This decision has not been taken lightly, but it is a direct consequence of the Online Safety Act and the new regulatory obligations it introduces for online platforms, including forums such as ours.
The Online Safety Act places extensive legal requirements on operators of online services to monitor, moderate, and remove a wide range of content, while also introducing severe penalties for non-compliance. These measures include:
- Active content monitoring: We would be required to proactively scan all posts for potentially harmful or illegal content, not just respond to reports. This necessitates costly automated tools and constant human moderation that a small business like ours simply cannot afford.
- Verification of user identity: The Act imposes strict rules around age assurance and identity checks to prevent minors from accessing certain types of content. Implementing such systems securely involves substantial technical, legal, and data protection complexities far beyond our current resources.
- Liability for user content: Forum operators can now be held legally accountable for harmful material posted by users, regardless of intent. This means that even well-moderated, community-driven platforms face significant risk from a single inappropriate post.
- Compliance reporting and oversight: The Act mandates regular audits, detailed risk assessments, and formal compliance reporting to regulators, further adding to the administrative and financial burden.
While the objectives of the legislation - to make online spaces safer - are understandable, its practical effect is to impose regulatory standards designed for large social media platforms onto small, niche communities.
For large tech corporations with dedicated compliance departments and advanced AI moderation tools, these requirements are challenging but achievable, but for business like ours, the cost of compliance is simply prohibitive.
We explored every option, from outsourcing moderation to upgrading our platform infrastructure, but the reality is that meeting these requirements would not be financially sustainable. Continuing to operate under the new law would expose us to significant legal and financial risk.
We know how much this forum means to many of you. It has been a place to share expertise, seek advice and connect with like-minded individuals. While it will no longer be possible to post new content, the forum will remain online in an archived, read-only form, ensuring that the wealth of information it contains is preserved for future reference.
The Back Room Forum has helped countless numbers of car buyers and owners over the years thanks to the efforts of all of you. We want to thank each and every member for all you have done and we hope you understand this decision we didn't want to take, but ultimately had to.
We'd also like to take this opportunity to thank the moderators - Roger (Xileno) and Mansel (Leaseman) for all their hard work and efforts over the years in ensuring the Forum had such a good community.
Thank you. The HJ team.
