Don't plough your cash into a van. Take your car (or the train) and stay in hotels (or B&Bs if money is tight) if your wife wants to spend more time away.

Vans are a very different used prospect than cars. Firms don’t get shot of vans when they just fancy a change, they typically offload them when they’re no longer economically viable or they’re simply unreliable. They’re also driven into the ground by uncaring staff. A good privately owned van is like hens teeth.

I wouldn’t touch any 10yr old van, especially anything with a modern DPF equipped diesel. It will almost certainly be a complete money pit. Sink a load of money into converting one and you’ll most likely take a big hit on it.

Maybe wants a cheap 4x4 to tow an old van when the inevitable happens?

Did they ever do a 3.0 HDI? I suspect that's a typo.

Agree with SLO76 as I have been down this road about six years ago. All the vans I looked at were either junk or over-priced, sometimes both. And if it's a Transporter you can add the 'Transporter Tax' on top. Good vans must be out there but it will be much harder than finding a good car, which itself is far from easy.

The one in the best condition and for that you need someone acting for you to have a very good poke around, which means getting it on a lift.

Some vans have an easy life, many are abused.

I've seen those but I have heard horrendous stories about insuring and maintaining imported cars/vans ?

If they were super-obscure, yes, but some of the Estimas are identical to UK Previas (I think one of those is a UK car anyway). Insurance is through a specialist broker like Adrian Flux. Most parts can be obtained through Toyota UK with a part number, otherwise there are specialist suppliers and breakers. Problems with imports mostly pre-date being able buy things online.

I've been down this route too. It's a maze with many mantraps. I completely agree with SLO. There are thousands of well worn out vans with a cheap conversion about, asking daft money. An old camper is still an old van. It is very easy to get taken in by the conversion and forget the 100k + miles on the vehicle. A couple of years ago I looked at a VW T5 conversion, the inside was beautiful but mechanically it was tired, with knocks, rattles and non functioning ventilation. And it was £20000. For a 20 year old van! The market is a bit daft, so take care and have your eyes open.

Think the OP just likes starting threads, often duplicates or very similar to previous threads. As with yesterdays thread, we've also had something similar to this one, back in Feb looking for a cheap van/MPV. In that case it hasn't for sleeping in, but then it was going to be carrying 5 adults and 3 dogs :-)

Not a typo, you did get them!

Hopefully, that guy who only wants a Lexus but won't buy a Lexus will be along soon.

Drove a courtesy van after dropping a truck off, Fiat Doblo think it was 65 plate with around 70k on it, wider and more roomy than most smaller vans and the way it drove (and went) was a surprisingly pleasant experience with a well spaced 6 speed manual box and a willing Diesel engine that wasn't prone to stalling, if the Doblo MPV has the same engine and running gear its an easily overlooked handy vehicle.
