Thinking of getting an SUV (used). I have three in mind, the Volvo xc60, Tiguan or the equivalent Kia. Any thoughts?

Do not know your budget but if I was buying an SUV I would be looking at

Honda CRV, Toyota Rav4, Mazda CX5, Kia/Hyundai - Petrols/Hybrid dpending on budget

SUV - Orb>>.

Of those three.....

The Kia or a Hyundai Tucson or the distant cousin a korando.

All mechanically similar.

What age and budget?

How are the Sportage and Tucson related to the Korando?

Difficult to make suggestions without a budget.

But given the OP is a long term forum member, i'm surprised that opinions are being sought on the XC60. Volvo's products in general are not rated that highly on the forum, certainly since the company ceased to be Swedish owned. The XC60 is probably the model which most often pops up in threads and respective OP's are warned against. SLO himself had one for a while and i'm not sure he had anything positive to say about it!.

The mechanical bits are mostly hyundai variations. Interior styling is familiar to anyone with a previous generation Sportage Tucson.

It is worth considering because,

An awful loy cheaper than the equivalent year/spec of the other two and like them utterly reliable. Snd in my opinion the seats are better.

I have searched on many sites for info about Ssangyong and Hyundai sharing mechanicals and other parts and there is absolutely no info whatsoever.

But historically Ssangyong have used other manufacturers oily bits.

The first gen Korando used Isuzu oily bits.

The 2nd gen used Mercedes oily bits.

The 3rd gen used Ssanyong parts.

The 4th gen uses Ssanyong parts.

As we all know Ssangyong have had a very chequered past and gone through many owners. None of those have been Hyundai Kia.

Hyundai were one of the suppliers that Ssangyong failed to pay in previous years, but they are a conglomerate so it may just have been the 'headlight bulb division' or something. I certainly wouldn't say a Lamborghini Murcielago is a distant cousin of a MK1 Ford Focus because (fun fact) they have the same side repeaters.

The KGM Rexton uses an 8 speed automatic from Hyundai’s gearbox division.

First thought - only three? Second thought - none of these. Mrs F bought a new Mk1 2019 Peugeot 2008 nearly six years ago for our runabout - still v. happy with it.

Third thought - cannot remotely offer suggestions until you put the following criteria in descending order their importance to you....high performance; comfort; fuel economy; size; VFM; style; ease of boot access; fuel preference; durability.

Not interested in high speed, those days have gone. Safety and comfort days now. Diesel is my fuel of choice and around £20k, I have asked about the xc60 as I've had several Volvos but have never driven an xc60. Thing is my v70 has been with me ten years and knocked up 200,000 miles so I've not had much cause to look at cars for a while.

I know you say diesel is your fuel of choice but with your budget, desire for an SUV, and (presumably) a desire for something as reliable as your V70, RAV4 (hybrid) for me, all day long!.

If it really has to be a diesel, i'm not really sure i'd be willing to recommend anything because of the potential for emissions equipment related issues?. Out of curiousity, I went on Autotrader looking for the newest diesel SUV with a 500+ litre boot available for £20k. 2024 Citroen C5 Aircross and Vauxhall Grandland (only one of each listed) available and FYI, are the same cars under the skin. The Citroen is noted for its comfort, but many on the forum are not fans of having things like temperature adjustment on the touchscreen, and the C5 Aircross is guilty of this whereas the Grandland has physical controls. Going back to 2023 cars, more of the above, along with the Peugeot version (3008) and the diesel engined Korando crop up.

My mate bought himself a (DSG) diesel Golf estate at the start of the year, but it was brand new (well pre reg I think), so this eliminates both the risk of DSG abuse by previous owner and the risk of DPF problems through previous owner only using for short journeys. So far, he is delighted with it.

I know it’s not on your list but in case you hadn’t considered - Mitsubishi Shogun Sport. Comfy and a closer match to that solid feel you have with Volvos of yesteryear.

As BBD suggest, Rav 4 hybrid or its Suzuki Across twin, the latter being available newer less miles and cheaper than the one with a Toyota badge, if anything the mild differences at the front end re grill lights and bumber are more pleasing to the eye to me at least on the Suzi version.

The performance on tap with the plug in versions is quite something.
