Audi TT Roadster mk3 - Blocked roadster roof channels - Robert J.

Hi all, would any more learned back roomers care to comment on the following course of action please?

I have an Audi TT roaster and after a heavy rain shower last week the drain tub behind the passenger seat was full of water. Apparently it’s a common problem and luckily for me the drain tub didn’t fill completely and overspill into the car. I have managed to siphon off the water with a hose pipe but need to get the drain flowing freely again. The drain tub is only visible with the hood halfway up when the flaps that conceal the winding mechanism are open. I can see the water but due to the winding gear I am unable to get my arm down to scoop out any gunk. I have asked Audi but they want the car for three days to completely strip the inside out to access the drain. I politely declined. Over on the TT users forum an owner put his car on ramps, removed under trays and exhaust heat deflectors to access the drain and managed to clear it from the bottom, but this is beyond me. Another user cautioned about poking wire coat hangers or some such into the drain for fear of ripping the soft plastic drain tube.

Then I read a post from an owner who poured Mr Muscle drain cleaner into his drain tub, let it soak for 5 mins and rinsed with boiling water. He claims this shifted his blockage but there was no further postings on any issues down the line and he hasn’t posted an update.

Looking at Mr Muscle, the ingredients are: sodium hypochlorite (that’ll be bleach then); caustic soda (a strong alkali) and some alkyl amine N-oxides (detergents). The hazard warning symbols are ‘corrosive’, I guess that’s the caustic and ‘may be corrosive to metals’. I am tempted to give it a go. As long as I give it a good flush with plenty of water afterwards I think it should be okay.

Any thoughts?

Think I'd be tempted to use something like garden strimmer line, a little more gentle than coat hanger wire, just a thought....

Strimmer line is a good call. I've used a bicycle brake cable for clearing sunroof overflows. You definitely want something more flexible that a coat hanger.

I would use the coated flexible wire that’s used for net curtains. Unblock the drains from underneath the car

Thanks for the replies. I could try strimmer line but the issue is: where to poke it (the drain is deep in bowels of a bulkhead and obscured by the hood winding mechanism) and apparently there is a foam plug in the drain tube. It has been suggested that poking any thing into the drain risks packing whatever is causing the blockage further into the foam. The foam is to reduce road noise entering the cabin, which seems a bit unnecessary in a soft top.

If there genuinely is a foam plug in that drain tube, it sounds like asking for a blockage, if only with slow accumulation of dirt. I second the net-curtain flexible wire which is only about 4mm wide and will go round all but the tightest corners.

There is a foam plug in the drain line according to other users and I agree, it’s asking for trouble. The issue is that the bottom of the drip tray is inaccessible from the top due to the winding mechanism being in the way. I can’t actually see where the drain is, let alone get a wire into it. So far I have managed to pour some water into the tray via a length of hose attached to a watering can, agitated the gunk in the tray as best I could and then siphoned out the suspended solids. It is dripping out under the car now, just not very quickly. It’s not accessible from the bottom either.

Caveat : Dont know this system, and in particular I cant picture what a "drain tub" might be

That said, in addition to the gentle catheterisation suggested, I might try hydraulic solutions, perhaps using an enema syringe with an IV line, which I have, or an oil removal syringe, which I also have and which are available in the UK. Screwfix do one but its tubing might not be fine enough to go down your piping,

If not you might still be able to get a sealed connection to your piping and back flush it, or alternatively connect it up to mains water pressure, or a compressed air supply.

I'd hold off on caustic solutions untill I had pretty thoroughly exhausted the mechanical alternatives

I have just unblocked mine today.

I took the cover off at the back of the seat, removed the main speaker which gives you access to a drain pipe.

I sucked the water out of the drain tub, removed the bottom of the drain pipe and blew up the pipe which freed a lot of muck, I then stuck a vacuum on the end of the pipe and refitted it.

It actually seems to have worked and it now draining!

Thanks all, I’ve got mine draining freely too. The outlet from the drip tray is a 90 degree elbow and strimmer wire is too flimsy to thread through. I managed to squeeze my hand down and poke it out with a piece of bent coat hanger wire.

Thanks again for all the suggestions
