Well I did call the garage after I got home, and they just said I'd need to bring it back for a diagnostic I plugged my cheap little reader in a while back and it told me that the glow plug circuit was open on cylinders 1&2, so given that there is almost 130k miles on the car it seemed reasonable that the plugs had started to give up.
So now I'm £350 down and still have a fault light on. The relay looks to be a doddle of a job to do. I'm getting rid of the car soon but want the fault light off if I can before I try to give it back
