Just checking my account which is showing as open with a healthy prepay balance and recent crossings appear not to have been charged. ( I only pay £2 as a prepay ) ( every little helps )

As above My account is open with correct details showing.

Shall I wait for the fine to arrive? or tell them.

Oh.. and the charges will rise from the 1st of September 2025 to standard rate £3.50 for cars.

Fortunately haven't had to use the crossing for several years but I was wondering when the prices would rise seeing as the Blackwall and new Silvertown Tunnels are now £4 (peak).

How much is the ferry these days? Did it a few times as a free pedestrian, but dont remember ever taking my car across.

I have been through the Blackwall tunnel a few times though and dont remember paying anything.

All the London tunnels are paying. Rates vary according to timings.

Woolwich ferry is still free for the moment

Actually, up to now my crossings are averaging £1 each way as normally southbound i travel before 6.00 am.

So It'll rise to £1.40 average..

Beware the Ferry is inside the ULEZ zone. Unless your in an EV.

You mean congestion charge?

Yes they are free dependant on the vehicle you use. crossing is free but ULEZ and congestion charges are two different things which depend on the vehicle. You might have to pay both.

PLUS

HGVs (Heavy Goods Vehicles), also known as lorries, do not need to pay the ULEZ charge, but they may need to pay the LEZ charge. The ULEZ is a charge for vehicles that do not meet the ULEZ emissions standards, but HGVs are exempt from this. However, HGVs, lorries, vans, buses, coaches, and other heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight (GVW) will need to pay the LEZ charge if they do not meet the LEZ emissions standards. The LEZ charge is £100 for certain vehicles, and £300 for others.

Wickipedia says "Until the opening of the nearby Silvertown Tunnel in April 2025, it (Blackwall Tunnel) was the easternmost free fixed road crossing of the Thames,", so,if this is correct, that probably explains my non-payment around the turn of the century, though it is still apparentlly free overnight 22.00-06.00 which might have been an alternative explanation, or I could have been owing them money for a while.

Scandalous. It paid for itself long ago. I'm still smarting from having my account emptied after failing to see an email demanding return of my obsolete DART-tag. Should have had another Thames crossing years ago (and a new Heathrow replacement airport in the deserted south bank Cooling area). I have invented a word which describes the insidious disease, like MND, progressively paralysing our country......legalosis.

<< Scandalous. It paid for itself long ago. >>

You might say that about the first Mersey tunnel, which I guess is approaching 90 years old. The amusing, and perhaps not surprising, thing about it is that when the human fare collectors were automated many years ago, takings miraculously increased :-)

I can remember hitchhikers standing at the toll booths,

Any - Dartford Crossing (s) - Terry W

The Dartford Crossing generates approximately £209 million in revenue annually. This includes both toll revenues and income from fines for unpaid charges. The crossing is the highest-earning toll road in the UK, with the M6 toll road in second place, generating around £53.7 million per year.

However, in 2008, charges were reclassified as a “road user charge” under the Transport Act 2000, meaning the crossing would continue to charge indefinitely to manage demand and congestion.

In short, the toll no longer funds the build—it now funds ongoing maintenance and traffic control. Basically a tax!!

The Dartford Crossing is now operated under a "second generation" system with two new contracts. Conduent Public Sector UK Limited is responsible for the charging system, using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). Emovis Operations Leeds Limited handles enforcement, including issuing fines and collecting debt. These contracts, worth a combined £270 million, went live in July 2023

Got to pay those nice management fees somehow.

Not really - money for those things has to come from somewhere. Better for it to be paid for (semi-)directly ?
