We have an upcoming wedding in Toronto in October and while there I am considering a short hop to Detroit to visit an old acquaintance. No problem with the formalities of the Esta and ETA..but last time i crossed at Detroit by land it seemed to take forever and my friends who live legally in Canada and cross for shopping and to see friends find that there are long queues and more checks.

Anyone been lately to the US crossing by land?

Last year crossed from USA to Canada by land (train). Was sniffed by dogs at the immigration.

The impression you get from the news is that it is now more like the Spanish Inquisition, so probably not much has changed unless you have posted in social media that Trump is a class 1 A-hole.

I heard it's advisable to only take a phone you don't mind losing when going to the US these days. A burner phone.

That is going to look a bit suspicious if they decide to be picky. The US border guards have always been pretty strict it is just that it seems to have been beefed up a bit lately. If you have all your papers in order, a valid return ticket, accommodation booked in advance and proof of adequate money you should be right. I think we can take it that you don't have lots of gang tattoos.

Gang tattoos? Didn't know it was a requirement. ;)

I've communicated with US Border peeps in the past. Can't recall any specifics. It was either Curly or Larry or possibly Mo.

Yeah, I crossed from Windsor to Detroit last month. It was mid-week around noon, and the wait was about 30 minutes. Not terrible, but definitely more checks than before. Just make sure all your documents are ready and be patient — weekends tend to be worse
