Citroen C1 - Clutch gone - Orb>>.

A while back I posted about moving a car for a very elderly friend. I said I thought the clutch had gone and it was underpowered. got a bit of backlash but mentioned he was interested in a new swift as a replacement.

Saw him today, had decided to keep the C1, but just off to collect it with a £645 bill for recovery and a new clutch.

Common failure on C1/Aygo/107’s. Partly down to weak clutches, partly down to the typically young/elderly drivers. I always factored in the cost of a clutch into any I bought. But it’s about £80 for a clutch kit for one of these, certainly less than £200 fitted the last time I had one done so your friend was absolutely robbed.

Probably 5 years ago now, family Aygo clutch slipping, their Toyota dealer quoted £700, our indy of the time did the job for £280 all in with LUK parts, so if your friend's clutch was done at the main dealer the cost wasn't too bad.

LUK clutch kit is around £85. About a hour to fit, someone's had there pants pulled down imho....

That's quick. Reminds me of the old Cavaliers where some reckoned it was about an hour.

Old cavalier and Astra models , didnt even need to remove the gearbox for a clutch change.

Oooh that takes me back - back then some cars had maintenance of this sort of thing designed in. Some Cavalier/ Astra fwd (not later models) , Datsun fwd (100A etc) and proper Saab 900 had access panels etc for clutch replacement. I couldn't believe it on my Datsun 100A when I changed the clutch - access plate on belllhousing and a panel to remove on an inner wing to access bolt and withdraw motion shafts. My mug of tea didn't even have time to go cold. Some rwd & 4wd cars had removable over bellhousing / bulkhead covers inside the car.

I had a 1984 Kadett in Switzerland and remember taking off the cover. Clipping the clutch assembly together, removing the first motion shaft and dropping it out then reversing the procedure. Water pump and cam belt change even I coped. Doddle to work on.

Maxi could be done by just removing a cover plate. Fiat 850 I recall was a doddle.

Incredible - in over 60 years motoring i have never had any work done on a clutch, Except a recent need to replace hydraulic cylinders on a 17-year-old Pug !
