Daughter #1 has just passed her test, so I’m looking for a car for her.

It’s got to be auto, and relatively(!) lower cost to insure. Budget c£1700.

I’ve homed in on first generation Škoda Fabia, 1.4.

Doing a bit of research, it’s coming up as a four speed auto, so pre-DSG. Anyone know which box this is?

The Volkswagen code is GJG. That's all I've got.

A first gen Fabia is going to be quite old now (youngest will be 2006/7), and while not unreliable, they are not really any better (or worse) than several others. So is there a reason for the Fabia specifically?

Bearing in mind the age of first gen Fabia's, surely also worth considering the 2nd gen Fabia. This used a Tiptronic, which that is not (as some think) the same as a DCT/DSG, but just a t/c with manual shifting option. They use a 1.6, but economy and drivability are going to be better through having 6 gears.

Not a trendy choice for a young lady (but neither is an old Fabia!), but first gen Nissan Note a worthy choice and very reliable. Similarly the often overlooked Ford Fusion, in 1.6 form (there was a 1.4 auto, but it used the Durashift automated manual).

When you pay insurance for four cars, you set search filters on insurance groups….
And the Fabia is commendably low. I was looking at Renault Modus, but that came out three times as expensive.
She has zero pretensions when it comes to cars, so image plays no part in it whatsoever.
It needs two pedals, to start and get her to her historical reenactment shows.
And be cheap enough to knock the corners off without any financial worry.

Sorry, just to clarify, the pre-facelft (2007-2010) 2nd gen Fabia used a Tiptronic (with the n/a 1.6), facelifted cars used a 1.2 TSI with DSG.

One of the stranger things I've learned on this forum is that a low insurance group doesn't necessarily translate into low insurance cost. Something to do with the type of cars typically bought by (and crashed by!) younger drivers.

But as it happens, I do have a Fabia-young driver anecdote. My nephew bought a 1st gen Fabia VRS (the 130bhp 1.9 turbo diesel)! as his first car. I asked about the insurance and he said apparently insurers class the Fabia as a family car, and that his insurance was cheaper than the 1.4 Fiesta he'd got a quote for before, go figure!

But going back quite a bit further, something similar re the son of a family friend. Having just passed his test, his Dad (an insurance salesman) bought him a Volvo 440 1.8i. Cheaper insurance than the typical choice for a new driver at the time (early 90's) of fiesta or Nova. So something like the Nissan Note (or Ford Fusion) could also work out cheaper to insure, as it isn't the typical choice for a new driver.

Such a small budget is going to severely limit you though, as there just isn't going to be much available. Probably going to cone down to the best of what is available to you within a reasonable distance.

I’ve run quotes on quite a few cars now, so I’m getting to grips with what’s feasible and what’s not.
She’s the advantage of being 25, but the disadvantage of being a full licence holder for a whole 6 hours (at time of typing).

Dare I suggest a Vauxhall Astra . These use an Aisan Warner auto box that are generally pretty good . Probably looking at a car around 2008 -10

Pre Powershift automatic Ford Fiesta and Focus are generally robust things too. Mazda 2/3 auto again good news also. I’ll second the Astra auto also, I’ve never had any bother with any Vauxhall autos I’ve flogged relating to the gearbox.
