Ford Transit - Get MOT done 1 hour's drive away at usual place or - driverofavehicle

I am umming and ahhing about this.

The one an hour away is what my mum uses and used them before no problems.

I am wondering if it is better to drive the hour or so back just for the MOT test. Are there advantages to that or should I pick any nearest to current location?

I know the official line is that all MOT centres will test perfectly equally but the word on the street seems to differ. Even besides the MOT they might be grumpy or any manner of other things that would make them disagreeable.

Of course you don't want them passing a dangerous vehicle and I read legally they aren't allowed to fail one without good cause but it seems there is a bit of a middle ground.

To put it succinctly the one I got before from local one back there I would trust whereas a new one may or may not be good.

It has also been suggested to use this opportunity to find one in the local area in case of future repairs. In this case I would look to repair myself if not requiring loads of specialist equipment and it seems most things can be done with the Haynes manual at your side.

Unfortunately, following this analogy, there is no way to DIY an MOT.

Wherever you go , no mot test centre is going to guarantee you a pass . There are many parts of the test that are subjective. One man’s pass could be another man’s fail or advise . Don’t forget, if it fails , then you’ll need to take it back for the re-test . I would ask a friend or neighbour for advice.

That is my point, the one I know I feel will give a fair test and even more lenient than a stranger which may or may not be on the lenient side.

Anecdotally it has been suggested that some centres offer cheap MOT's but their subjective views may tend toward 'fail' rather than 'advisory', thereby leading to repair work.

Much as some main dealers with targets to meet drum up repair work when a vehicle is in for routine service.

Some councils will do MOTs at their vehicle depots and don't do repairs so should be honest

(I'm old and cynical, as a result of 60+ years motoring experience)

As said, ask around. There are plenty of test centres to choose from - some people recommend the ones service vehicles go to. I don't think it's worth travelling much more than is necessary for an MoT, tho you will find some places charge a fiver less than others.

Back in the day, before test results were online, there were places which would 'cut corners' for the business, but I'm sure central stats have shown them up long ago.

Re the Haynes manual, that is useful for doing your own check before going for the 'real' one. If the Transit is newish, there may be several things that Haynes will not help you with ?

A transit at 20 years old is likely to be rotten underneath. Think I’d be checking this first . No mot station is going to be sympathetic if rust is prevalent.

The main problem for me would if it failed at the remote garage. If they are majors it can’t be driven. There is no grace period and the failure is online immediately. So you either have to have it repaired in situ or towed to another garage for repair for anything beyond your own capabilities. Doing this an hour away is adding complication.

I would try to find a local MoT garage who could do work if it’s not a DIY job. Hopefully it will all turn out OK whatever you opt to do,
