MGRV8, XJS Convertible or TVR Chimera - MGRV8, XJS Convertible or TVR Chimera? - Mattyo76
Hi there,
I am looking for a British (always the best looking classic cars in my opinion), modern classic convertible. I love a classy looking car for Goodwood days etc.
I have whittled it down to the MGRV8, Jaguar XJS Convertible or the TVR Chimera.

I live on the South Coast and am looking for a car to do my usual 1hr commute to Brighton 3 days a week (about an hour). But will also take the car down to France from time to time.

I love the looks of the MG, but realise it’s not the biggest.
The Jag would be great for motorway cruising and is probably the sensible option, as well a classy looker. But I can’t get past the fun I had while test driving the TVR, but will this be short lived?
I’m single with no kids, so don’t need to worry about back seats etc.

I have around £17k to spend, so should be able to get all in budget.

Just wondered on your thoughts please, given the above scenarios and that I hope to buy within the next couple of weeks?

Many thanks

MGR probably easier to get fixed. Xjs will cost more to fix and less parts availability. Read the TVR forums before buying!

XJS , all day long . 4l litre straight 6 engines are very durable . Classic jaguar ride with reasonable fuel consumption. The other 2 are bitza cars and the MG doesn’t have power steering. With any of them , check for rust and corrosion, especially the TVR chassis. The jaguar is probably the most reliable here, if you go for the latest model possible. 93 onwards .

Jag for me because there is plenty of back up and expertise out there, but don't rush in. As above go for the straight 6.

Your timing is perfect as we are entering car show season.

Start looking now, get involved in the local owners groups, visit as many car shows with Jaguar owner or enthusiast club stands over the next few months. Find out about the vehicles, its also a place to pick up very well sorted examples.

£17K is just the deposit. As a daily runner the owner would likely be on first name terms with the local garage and forking out regularly to keep the car on the road.

At a modest £17K budget (in today's market) I would probably downsize my ideas and buy myself a fairly recent / low mileage Mazda MX5 and enjoy a reliable soft top ( + a tin top for the cold months).
