I was prodded by an old Brummie mate today to remember the 20th anniversary of the collapse of MGRover.

Sad indeed that it had slipped my mind.

Gets me really annoyed to think of the Phoenix Four who I believed at the time would rescue the company and hoping for a tie up with Honda which were so successful in producing the 600 and Acclaim . Rover Cars that rarely broke down !

Took £55.000.000 out of it for themselves.

Grr.

A few years ago I posted a link to the Government enquiry.

It was not pretty reading !

I've always thought it was a great shame Jon Moulton of Alchemy didn't get to buy it. He could see the company was doomed, churning out tired old Hondas. As a specialist sports car maker it may have survived but the cuts he was proposing were too politically harsh for the Government. I'm sure I read somewhere that when the Phoenix bunch got their paws on it that he predicted it would last five years at best. He was right. When that dreadful CityRover came out, all could surely see the game was up.

Would you believe a elderly chap up the road from me still runs around in a cityrover....

It's a real shame. The 75 was an excellent car and you still see quite a few around today. The MG variants also had a bit going for them but were, with the exception of the ZT, over styled. The facelifts did them no favours. If they had found a middle ground between the Rover models with their stick on wood and the MG models with their stick on spoilers, they would have had a fairly good model line up..

I think the struggle they had was finding a partner to work with. Honda and BMW had already had their goes and I don't think anyone else fancied it. I suspect all their best people went with Mini and, to some degree, Land Rover too.

I knew a couple of production engineers who went to BAE. And some who moved a few miles up the M42.

Sadly did the engine people go to design a worse engine. ?

I heard that SIAC the Chinese buyers called back a few MG Rover engineers to redesign the cylinder head on the K series engine. And by all reports they seem to have been successful ?

MGRover were almost at the same point but didn't have the money to do it and Land Rover had already done an oilway mod to strengthen the block

Anyone remember the MG Atomix special editions of the ZR & ZS?

Things must be really bad for a car company if they have to team up with Atomic Kitten

Mg Rover we’re so closely aligned with Honda it’s a shame that all the money spent on new engines wasn’t saved and engines bought from Honda.

Lots of customers would have bought spin offs of the Accord which was one of my and still is my favourite car.in all its generations . Sells well in the USA who have the world to choose from and sold well as the Rover 600 .

The Civic too has always sold well and could look good with small mods to make it more anglicised

I had a Rover 216 which had a Honda engine an the rest of the car appeared to be a Honda Concerto, excellent performance and handling and the engine was non-interference so a cheap fix when the cambelt broke.

A few days after the collapse I was offered a R75 2,o cdti for £9995. unregistered.

Lots of cars went for silly money.

But loosing back My R75 2,5 was a good car.

My work colleagues last car was a 75 and the news that he had lost so much money on his new car was a major blow !

It was his last car before he died and his wife told me he regretted not getting a Lexus which was his first choice but he held back because of the cost !

There's T reg 200 still rattling around the local town, I see it regularly. It looks a bit dog-eared but it's entitled to do so at that age. The L series diesel still sounds good and strong.
