Range Rover - An unreliable Range Rover hybrid? Who knew? - craig-pd130

Matt at High Peak Autos has just done a video about a 2015 Range Rover Sport hybrid with 66,000 miles, which had a problem with its traction battery pack. The price that Range Rover wanted to replace the battery pack with a new one is somewhat eye-watering.

I guess any 10-year-old hybrid (apart from a Toyota / Lexus) is a risk, but you're never going to win gambling on an older Range Rover hybrid ....

Has anyone heard the conclusion on the Luton Airport fire and which model was involved in the initial stages of the incident ?

It was a non-hybrid diesel. Sorry to disappoint.

The garage that fixed it certainly have tapped into a good market. £6000 still seems a lot to me but hugely better than what LR were quoting for a complete new battery.

I haven't watched any of Matt's videos for a while but thought he's looking a bit thin. Maybe the stress of stocking Range Rovers!

Heh, that certainly won't help! In a couple of videos he's mentioned that he's doing a fairly strict gym routine and watching his diet, which may explain it.

How strange the media have not mentioned it...

- "How strange the media have not mentioned it..."

They have. A quick Google shows multiple examples.

“The report confirmed the vehicle was ‘diesel-powered’ and not ‘a mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle’.” (BBC March 2024)

“The London Luton Airport car park fire, which impacted more than 1,350 vehicles last year, was not caused by an electric vehicle, as a report found a diesel Range Rover was to blame.” (GB News Oct 2024)

“…the fire started due to an ‘electrical fault or component failure’ in the engine of the diesel-powered car.” (Luton Today Oct 2024)

“The report also concluded that the car had a diesel engine, and stated that ‘it was not a mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle’, quashing widespread internet claims that the blaze was started by a battery-powered model.” (The Independent March 2024)

How many more do you want?

What is really strange is that, despite the wide media coverage, and plenty of other evidence about the safety of electric cars, people still want to believe that the incident supports the contrary view.

Of course, although a diesel may have started the fire, the involvement of EVs could well have made things pretty bad ?

To be clear, it was an electrical fault in a diesel car that was the cause of the inferno.

The following may be relevant:

"When investigating the fire’s environmental impact, the team at BFRS tested surrounding water samples and found little trace of lithium and cobalt – two vital ingredients in electric car batteries...

"What fire teams did notice at the scene, however, were signs of so-called ‘running fuel’ fires, which may have played a key role in the inferno spreading as fast as it did. The suspected cause of these are the plastic fuel tanks fitted to most modern production cars; plastic tanks, such as the one fitted to the Range Rover that was the source of the blaze, are described by the BFRS investigators as 'more susceptible to failure in the initial stages of a developing fire', thus causing the flammable liquids (i.e petrol and diesel) inside to flow out and set alight." More likely things were made pretty bad because I suspect most people would have ensured their fuel tanks were fairly full for the return journey home. I doubt if we are alone in filling up at our local supermarket shortly before a return trip to Luton.

Agreed, and there was an interesting postscript to that (interesting and informative) video - when picked up from the original vendor the vehicle had been hooked up to a trickle charger... as Matt mentioned through gritted teeth. So, "who knew?" indeed.
