A friend is a fan on the Nissan Juke. I have to admit that they seem a pretty reasonable for a small cross-over. I an however staggered by the amount she has had to spend on repairs and maintenance over the years. The latest one lost power a few weeks ago and was recovered by the RAC. A burnt exhaust valve was diagnosed and a quote of £2000 given (seemed a lot to me but I am old skool). Anyway the total bill has come to just under £3,500!!! Does this seem right? The price for skimming the head and inserting new valve guides is £600. A similar job on my V6 Calibra was £200 for both heads seven years ago. What are peoples thoughts?

Virtually all major repairs on modern cars have become extremely expensive. There aren’t many manufacturers out there that make a durable engine. Most are made of chocolate. A friend has just had a water pump done on his Audi , £1k job . Sadly we’re not driving cortinas any longer . I always advise people if they are buying new or nearly new to get rid once the warranty has expired.

Nice if you don't mind paying the depreciation.

My current local indie is a VAG specialist who loves a good moan about this topic. No parts last more than 2 or 3 years and cost the earth, etc. He prefers working on my old Pugs because they are simpler, and especially on the 205, easier to get at things underneath. I suppose part of the high maintenance cost of modern cars is the time for dismantling before the part in question can be got at - another moan he makes ....

Mechanics seem to like moaning about time consuming jobs, especially many of those on youtube. Not sure why, really, as they charge an hourly rate, so why are they bothered? If parts lasted forever, and the few repairs that were needed only took 20 mins and can be done without any special tools or knowledge, they’d all be out of a job within weeks.

Quite a few of the moans are about warranty work. The manufacturers pay the garage a fixed rate based on the number of hours they think the job should take, which is less than generous.

The industry leading ten year warranty offered by Toyota seems to be the way to go after learning about a major engine failure on a 6 year Korean car which was refused as the previous service was delayed due to the dealer being closed during lockdown

Agreed, the only make we'd consider buying new or nearly new, not just for the warranty but from very good ownership experiences over many years and my previous kerbside cowboy oddjobbing from decades ago.

Apart from that SWMBO is a big fan of the marque, she doesn't want flash or image she just wants something thats works doesn't break and is relatively simple (excl Mr T's sat nav which is ridiculously complicated), and as any sensible chap knows a happy wife = happy and quiet life :-)

If you want reliability, Honda and Toyota are the way to go..

No failures costing more than £60 in combined usage of 30 years,

I’ve had 2 Toyota Avensis from new. Traded them in at around 65k with original discs and pads and not even a bulb blown. Neighbour has a 2018 Audi A6 estate. New pads required 20k. New discs and pads required at 35k - quoted £750 by Audi. Got them replaced at a reliable independent but still had to pay £400. Why buy a so-called prestige marque.

Your neighbour either drives like a lunatic or (more likely) has been fleeced by a shyster. I had an A6 and the pads and discs lasted far longer than that. My current Audi A8 did over 70,000 miles before the original front pads 'required' replacement (I've just had the rear pads replaced at 73,000 miles); the original eighteen year old discs are all still perfectly serviceable after a bit of de-rusting attention.

I think that advising customers to replace pads and discs before they actually need replacing is a scam so widespread it is accepted as normal practice.

Our Toyota needed the complete air conditioning system replacing under warranty so no charge. The Honda tailgate failed as did a rear caliper, again under warranty, so no charge. The most reliable was the Jaguar XF which only needed a new door lock in 7 years ownership. The Alfa was pretty good too. That needed a headlight washer.

........if you are a high mileage driver. But for a reasonably competent retiree now doing only a few thousand miles a year, being tied into ten years of expensive dealer service with inflation linked costs of probably well over 200 of today's pounds for some of those years when there might be replacement of things which need not be replaced by overpriced replacements might not be a financially wise option.

Offering a ten year warranty would probably bankrupt any European manufacturer. Remember when Renault extended their warranty from three to four years and quickly reverted when the bills started stacking up.

Offering a ten year warranty is presenting tge companies faith in the quality of the product and we are yet to see any other manufacturer sufficiently confident in their product to offer this.

Yes, unsurprisingly Alfa’s 5 year warranty didn’t last long either.
