Peugeot Partner - Vehicle won't start in garage after MOT&Service - ruthm4x

Peugeot Partner went in for service & MOT 2 weeks ago. 10yr service.

Service done, failed MOT as expected, needed a spring doing. Husband asked for timing belt doing as it's 10. Then we got a call to say it wouldn't start. There's power, but no starting. They plugged the computer in, computer says all fine.

The garage owner while talking to both of us after explaining the above said "It's something we've [the garage] done" then went quiet very quickly & looked at me, I looked at him as if we both acknowledged & logged what he'd just said & he looked like he was kicking himself for saying it out loud. He knows I heard him.

(I know the guy, used to go to him many years ago as he's a mate of a mate).

They took the battery out while doing the works, which after speaking to several mechanics & garages I now understand wasn't necessary, & it may be that they've not reset correctly. We found a procedure suggestion online & sent it across as they were stumped.

They say they've tried everything they can think of, & say they have an autoelectrician specialist coming to see if they can fix it.

The vehicle is taking up one of their hydraulic lifts as it won't move, & at one point they said they were going to have to move on to other jobs as they were getting behind!! Cheek!

It was running absolutely fine when we took it in, hasn't had any starting issues, doesn't do many miles as it's only a few miles drive to work & back.

Went today & asked for a courtesy vehicle, collecting it tomorrow as long as we can sort insurance. I've got a few days cover to see us up to Tuesday.

My plan is, once (if) it's fixed, I'll knock the cost of the temp insurance off the total as it's their fault we've ended up needing to buy it.

They also gave us a good idea of cost for the works we knew needed doing, the service & the MOT. Now, I'm fully expecting it to be slightly higher as you can't be 100% on these things, but I have a reasonable limit in mind. I don't believe we should pay for anything extra. They've had the vehicle much longer than they should have, & they admitted the issue is down to them.

If they can't fix it, do they have an obligation to claim for a replacement for the vehicle on their insurance?

Do they have a duty to get this resolved one way or another?

Does it come under Consumer Rights?

Are they liable for the costs over & above the works we asked for, the service & the MOT?

Was it this procedure you sent them?

The battery procedure is really only for key resyncing. Failing to do it won't cause the car to not start

Get them to try the key beep test

You might also want to ask the garage to get a fellow Peugeot owner to pop round with their kit. I freelance for lots of local garages around Merseyside, Wirral and Cheshire when their "scan any car" readers fail to show a fault:

Although my guess would be they've not done the belt properly and bust the engine.

Although my guess would be they've not done the belt properly and bust the engine.

My initial thought too. It does happen. I had a new timing belt on a Vectra and tensioner wasn’t torqued up correctly.

Mine too. This was my fear while putting a new timing belt on the Skywing recently,

I'd got it to the point where it was turning over smoothly by hand, then I re-tensioned the belt tensioner (with an actual measured force rather than just eyeballing the belt deflection) and the belt started skipping a bit. Probably I screwed up measuring the force. Access was restricted.

Was going to revert to eyeballing it next day but the cops got the car.

I discovered I didnt like autodestructing rubber band engines much, though one might think the pros would be used to them.

What engine is in it?

Oh dear. Yet another sad story of a disastrous attempt to exchange an original cambelt which probably looks as good as new (how many miles has it done?) just because it's getting on a bit. Here's a link to an interesting misfortune.....

......and you can click on a link within that thread to another 1.6 diesel HDI cambelt discussion. One poster says these engines hardly ever snap their belts. Another poster says that they are difficult to start after head work because the oil drains out of the tappets; although that shouldn't apply here. They had to tow start it, which is something the OP might try.

You took a running car to the garage who agreed to do the work you asked for and (I assume) gave you an estimate of the cost.

They seem not to have found any further issues on doing the work - had they done so they should have called you with an estimate of any additional costs (unless very minor).

Personally I would be very blunt - it was working, you are the experts, I expect it back with the work done and working. If you can't do this then we need to discuss compensation.

I suggest you talk to Citizens advice just to be very clear of your rights.
