we have had transmission malfunction come up a few times only in reverse though , cant remember the code but it was a bit vague so we have been told to drive it in manual that seems to rectify it a bit bus as soon as you go back to just using drive eventually it comes back. our mechanic said it may be the solonoid , does this sound plausible.

we also have a leak in the pipes to the gear box and we have been quoted 350 to fix plus complete fluid change , is this price about right

Automatic box faults can be difficult to diagnose and expensive to fix. Once the gearbox has been investigated further , other faults may be apparent. This could easily ramp up the price and make it uneconomical to repair . Consider you can buy these cars for less than £1000 now . If your mechanic thinks he can fix it for that price , then probably worth doing .

If its a 1.6 petrol then, given the year, there is a chance its the dreaded Ford CVT. If it is then just scrap it and be thankfull its lasted this long. There aren't many left for a reason. Parts are not available and your mechanic will be very unlikely to fix it.

If its a 2.0 petrol then it will be a standard torque converter auto. Is the 350 to change oil and filter, change pipes and replace the solenoid?

its not a CVT, the quote excludes the solenoid and its to change the leaky pipes that come from the gear box and a total auto fluid change as it hasnt been done for a while. he hasnt quoted the solenoid yet

I am by no means an expert but I guess the price seems roughly right especially if you are in the south of the country. Probably 150-200 parts and 2-3 hours of labour. Make sure the change is a total change not just an empty and refill which leaves half of the old fluid behind.
