Maybe as they thought the company was going bankrupt they decided not to bother to do a lot of work?

I believe it's all resolved now tho' so back to normal I hope

Surely HJ is entitled to a holiday!

Surely HJ is entitled to a holiday!

I'm beginning to wonder if this 'holiday' (not that today's column was written by Dan Powell, not HJ himself [thanks misar for the spot]) is not actually 'gardening leave'...

- stojom
Hope this is a temporary glitch because of the recent changes and HJ hasn’t left as it doesn’t seem his style. Always look forward to his column over Saturday breakfast be tragic if we lost it.

I agree that these responses do not feel to have been written by HJ.

Timing belts on used cars.

I usually buy my used cars privately, the last time i bought from a trader he was up front that he gets his workshops to fit a new timing belt regardless of history, because he was very much on board that he was responsible for whatever went wrong in the first 6 months, so a bit of preventative he considered good investment, sensible method IMO...i paid the difference between motor factor and full maker's belt kit because he would otherwise have fitted an aftermarket belt and kit.

Where i buy privately, i'll assume the belt hasn't been done, and inspect the thing closely (you can tell a recent belt from one that's been on for a long time) for myself and judge whether it needs doing or not when i service and go through the car immediately after purchase.

It would make sense for those not mechanically minded to assume the worst on a private sale (unless real receipts to prove and you trust the seller) and get a new one fitted regardless.

Re : Do you think EV prices will come down, The questioner says they tow a caravan, it would be interesting to know the effect of towing (I assume EVs can tow?) has on range, I suspect it is dramatic.
HonestJohn.co.uk's Motoring Agony Column 07-03-2020 - BrendanP

Unless one has a compelling reason to buy an EV right now, I think it would be prudent to hang on for a few years. The fines that the EU intend to impose on car manufacturers if average CO2 emissions of their sales exceed 95gm/km may force some of them to slash prices of their EVs to promote more sales thereby bringing down the average CO2 of what they sell overall. Whilst they may end up making little or no profit on EVs, it may still work out cheaper that paying the fines. There is also the issue of the low voltage distribution system - which supplies electricity to your home - being incapable of supplying the power to recharge EVs once they are being bought in larger numbers. Rather than spend tens of billions upgrading the network, the Government may find a way of rationing electricity usage so that the only way of fully charging your EV battery is to take it to a purpose-built charging station where you will pay through the nose for the power. Finally, the government will have to find some way of recovering the revenue lost through falling sales of petrol and diesel, which will probably result in some form of tax on the use of EVs.

THE consumer motoring website Honest John has gone into administration after suffering ‘significant cash flow difficulties’.

Documents lodged with Companies House show that the automotive support service HonestJohn.co.uk, co-owned by Peter Lorimer, 71, appointed

St. Albans-based specialist business advisory firm FRP Advisory as its administrator on January 7.

HEYCAR takes HonestJohn.co.uk out of administration with purchase deal

February 18, 2020

ONLINE used car marketplace HEYCAR has struck a deal to buy the website HonestJohn.co.uk which went into administration last month, it was announced this afternoon.

The start-up said it cemented its intention to bring greater trust and transparency to the market and to continue rapid growth.

Peterborough-based HonestJohn.co.uk – which publishes advice and reviews of cars and vans on its website and has a Cars for Sale section as well – has been established for two decades, boasting many millions of site visitors.

HEYCAR,, a new online marketplace for used cars in the UK, is backed by

VOLKSWAGEN Financial Services and DAIMLER Mobility. It was launched in Germany two years ago and has now arrived in the UK.

So, no more DSG gearbox, 1.5 TSI engines, Dieselgate and VAG quality issues to never be SEEN OR ANSWERED ever again...???

Good Luck and CHOCK DEE to John and the 18 other members of staff.

Maybe they could have kept their Independence by having a crowdfunding campaign ??

No wonder the stock market foundered... This man taught us an enormous lot over many many years. I, for one, am deeply thankful. If the term irreplaceable applies to anyone, it is him.

Are we to assume that this website is now moribund?
