New roadside devices. What are they ? - autumnboy
Recently on a new By-pass between Newton Abbot and Torquay, new devices mounted on tall Yellow lamp standards have been erected/installed.

Anyone know what they are, whether they are traffic monitoring or speed/saftey cams ??

Average speed cameras

New roadside devices. What are they ? - KB.

It's been in the local press that they are installing average speed cameras on that stretch so that's what they''ll be - to the best of my knowledge they aren't up and running yet though.

Thanks both.

What is the average percentage of over speed error allowed. ?

Some seem to do over the stated speeds at various controlled areas.

It depends on the Police Force. Bear in mind it's the average between one camera post and the next one, so as long as you're average is below the threshold, you can go above the limt for part of the time, as long as you slow down otherwise. The problem is judging that, if you're going to. You'd have to know the distance between the camera posts and calculate on the fly how long it SHOULD take at the threshold (for a ticket) speed to go between them.

Try doing that if there are more than one set of cameras and/or they are not right next to the distance markers (little white posts on the verge). I'd rather be concentrating on the road.

Note sure if some of these cameras also have a spot speed function as well (like a traditional Gatso camera), but I'd never risk it. Note also that quite a few police forces are thinking of enforcing the EXACT speed limit, literally 0.1mph above and you're nicked. Lucky our speedos are designed to always read over by up to 10%. I'd also be wary of relying on a satnav speed nowadays to give an 'accurate' indication and to religiously go at the limit as the satnav says you're doing.

Or you could just drive at or under the speed limit!

These average speed cameras (IIRC known as SPECS) do seem to stump the average Joe and Joanne. Regularly get traffic slowing down to 60 on the A14 when they see them, only to speed up again between the two sets. So many people think the speed limit on a non-motorway dual carriageway is 60 MPH.

If police forces are to seek prosecutions for going over an exact speed then everyone will need to have a much more accurate and calibrated speedometer than they currently have.

A speedometer is calibrated to under-read by 10%, or whatever the figure happens to be, when it's brand new out of the box. I wouldn't like to even guess what the calibration was like after it had been installed in a vehicle for 10 years or 100,000miles.

Speedometers are never tested at an MOT test, only to test that they are fitted and they work. That would probably need to change, too.

Speedometera are "calibrated" to OVER-read by up to 10% so no-one has any excuse for exceeding exact limits

An acquaintance of ours says that she's received a fine after being clocked by a newly installed camera mounted on, or near a 30mph sign on a nearby road, so maybe something similar to that observed by the OP. However, she claims that this camera is concealed.

I thought there was something in law about speed cameras being clearly visible?

I think they are supposed to be visible, but it could be that vegetation has got overgrown and obscure the camera until the last moment. Many on country roads are like that. Normally, Plod mitigate this by installing a camera sign within a reasonable distance of the camera unit (I do remember something a while ago saying it has to be within 1 mile or 1km of the sign. Trouble is that those signs (I think) can also apply to regular spots used by mobile camera vans - as I've seen in my own town.

As people have said, if you stick to the speed limit on your speedo, you won't get nicked.

Simples.

<< Speedometers are "calibrated" to OVER-read by up to 10% so no-one has any excuse for exceeding exact limits. >>

To be brutally correct, I believe speedos are permitted to over-read by up to 10% but must NOT under-read by any amount. As a rule, though, most car speedos will read over by about 7 or 8% in my experience. It worries me slightly that the MoT test makes little attempt to check this under pseudo-normal driving conditions.

In 55 years of driving I have yet to be caught speeding, despite driving while assuming that my speedo is over-reading slightly.

Most car spedos over read both my cars are about 2-3 mph out where as lorries have to be. Calibrated because of the tachograph and are very accurate.

I just happened to see, this morning, an article on the local news site to the effect that a couple of drivers have been caught doing 100mph in the stretch in question. It was 70mph after it was built but is now 50mph. I'm guessing 100 in a 50 will be frowned upon.

They'll be lucky if they keep their licences.
