Suzuki Swift - Petrol and temperature gauge lights flashing - Halmerend
Hi All

When my lad puts his lights on, the two gauge lights are flickering badly. Rest of dash lights seem ok. Can anyone advise please?

Thanks

Rob

Flickering lights could possibly be an indication of a voltage fluctuation. I would get the charging circuit tested to make sure voltage from the alternator is within specification. Also check connections to the battery and leads including the earth contact points.

Used to be these ran on a voltage stabiliser circuit.

A little chip dropped down bat voltage so as to minimise fluctuations.

So as the "Doc" suggests battery/alternator check test would be my first look.

Is that a job for an auto electrician or can I take it to somewhere like Kwik fit?

It is unlikely any kwik-fix place will have the expertise or skill to check a problem like this. If you take the car to one of these outfits ,you are likely to come out with new tyres and brakes. Take the car to an electrical specialist.

Probably worth taking it your Suzuki dealer, there was a few electrical issues that Suzuki recognised as manufacturing faults and fixed for free, mine had the entire dash replaced for free because of a fluctuating rev counter, there was also a issue with the clock loosing time that was another free fix.....worth asking

Rob - my only comment would be that next time you tell us the age of your car, which could make a lot of difference to your replies.

Sorry it’s a 2011 model.

Just found out the boots full of water so not sure if it’s related.

I’m pretty sure the water is coming in behind one of the rear lights where the wiring goes into a hole in the body. The seal is unseated but the rubber is so soft it won’t reseat. Will have to see what I can do when it stops raining.

If water is getting into the rear light connector, then this could affect the operation of the dash illumination. Dry it out and check the multi pin connector.

Thanks. Looks like there’s a block where the wiring goes into the body. Wonder if I can break it there, dry it out and slide on a new seal?

Found out where the leak is so will report back as it may help someone else in future. It’s not the light grommet. Lower down on the same left rear side there is a plastic ventilation housing with flimsy thin rubber vents. When I touched it, it fell into the back of the bumper. Retrieved this, cleaned it up and refitted it and tested it and all seems fine. Probably nothing to do with my original post though sorry so still got the flickering lights issue. Will get it tested as advised thanks.

Update on the original issue regarding the petrol and temperature lights not working. Flattened battery caused by interior light being left on over the weekend. Jump started it and the two lights are working now! Haven’t got a clue why or how!
