Audi Q7 - Air conditioning issues - Matt1985

Hi I'm new.

Bought a 2008 3.0tdi s line a few weeks ago and the a/c doesn't work properly. The econ light was on all the time so i had it pressure tested. Changed the pipe on the nsf and pressure tested again, all good so had it charged. Worked for a couple of days then stopped working but i was able to switch econ on and off.

Took it back to the garage and they connected the machine, low pressure side was reading 1.5 bar and 6 bar on the high pressure side. Technician said they should both be 6 bar with the engine off so he recharged the system. All went well, it passed the vacuum test and was getting cold air again but he did say it had lost 70g of gas in a week.

Drove it to a friends around a 30 minute trip all worked fine. Left it for 2 hours and drove home. Strai?ght away no a/c. Turned the whole system off, whilst driving, switched it back on and it started to work again? but then stopped again whilst driving.

Any a/c guru's out there?

The fault has already been diagnosed - it lost 70g of coolant in a week.

If the syustem is refilled up to full pressure, then the loss rate will be higher (think of any system under pressure with a leak. The higher the pressure, the greater the leak).

So you need to find out where the leak is coming from, and get that fixed.

One issue that often comes up is not a 'reliability' one, but of operation of the system. Most car owners rarely read the A/C section in the handbook as they think they are so easy to use.

This is true in most respects, but what they forget to do, especially with little used cars, or those living in areas/countries that a good portion of the year doesn't require the cooling function of the A/C, is to run the A/C or heater component to keep the system in tip-top condition:

1. In winter, at least once a month, if not once a fortnight, run the cooling for 10-15 mins so that the cooling system actually runs the A/C system, not just uses outside air to 'cool' the car (whether its needed or not). This may mean you have to turn the temperature setting to its minimum setting to get it to run in that mode.

This is to ensure the oils in the system circulate, lubricating the components and making sure they and the joints/seals don't dry out. Not doing so will eventually knacker those components (a bit like starting a rarey used car and thrashing it straight away, before the engine oil has had the chance to fully circulate) and can lead to leaks via the dried up seals.

2. Additionally, the heater should be used for the same time once a month or two normally, as often as required - on max temperature and recirc with a decent airflow rate (on manual control) to all vents (change as required), to kill off any accumulated bacteria in the air ducts. If the air from the system smells musty (especially when its not damp outside), then it needs doing, as that's the bacteria and moisture causing the smell. Using the cooling function of the A/C will only make it worse. Not doing so can lead to occupants getting more regular respiratory illnesses or make them worse/longer lasting.

Both these 'easy win' techniques may be a bit uncomfortable given you want to use the opposite in the weather at the time of year, but are well worth doing to avoid big bills for new A/C systems (recharging won't always work for the first) or being ill more often.

Whilst the above won't help the OP now, it could be (not necessarily) the reason (first issue above) why it happened, and is worthwhile doing for the future to avoid the problems I mentioned.

The a/c system on these holds around 700 gms full charge. A loss of 70 gms over a week is not a good sign, but the a/c will work adequately at this level of charge with current ambient temps. I think the problem could be elsewhere. The a/c systems fitted to VAG cars are notorious for faults with the a/c compressors and pressure sensing switches.Find a good indy tech that can monitor the actual values from the climate system via the diagnostic system using Vagcom/Vcds.

70 g loss in a 700g system won't stop the system making cold air.

Clearly you have a leak that needs finding, but that's a seperate issue.

The high pressure switches are a common fail on Audis, they can be changed with out losing gas from the system and take around 20/30 minutes to change.

Kwik Fit Et al won't be able to accurately fault find your system. An HVAC specialist or main dealer will.

When the system is off the high and low pressures will be equal and the pressure of them will be dependant on the ambient temperature. R134a (and other types) are affected by temperature.

The best way to find a leak on AC systems is not by vaccumm pressure, how we do it is by using nitrogen and filling the system with 150psi. this will show leaks really easily as the molecules in nitrogen are smaller than R134a so it leaks easier (for want of expression)

Take it for a proper diagnosis.

I've been driving cars with aircon since 1998 clocking up an average of 80k. I've had the aircon on constantly throughout the year with no noticeable increase in fuel consumption and never had any problems - always ice cold air in summer and effective demisting in winter. Neighbour refuses to turn on aircon in new Jag XF for fear of high fuel consumption, which is ironic!

Thank you Engineer Andy. You helped me a lot to solve my problem.

shame .my view is once its broke ,you just keeping throwing money at it . to no avail. sorry just my opinion

On a 13 year old car ensure the windows work and forget the ac.

German marques are notorius for plastics which go brittle over the years and it could be any one of the dozens in an aircon aystem which is leaking.
