The problem could be the belt is old and hard so would need replacing. It could also be a noisy tensioner / idler bearing which needs replacing.It might just need tensioning if you're lucky.

Not sure on this engine , but some vag engines suffer from major damage if the auxillary belt comes off and then damages the timing belt wrecking the engine.
