Ford Focus - Softened water - MXH

Hi

I live in a hard water area and plan on installing a water softener. Is it safe to wash my car with softened water?

Probably not - most water softeners work using salt, which isn't good for rust protection.

Its usual when you fit a water softener to plumb it in so the k****** sink cold tap and outside tap don't go through the softener but come straight off the mains, that way you drink/wash the car/water the garden with unsoftened water and the softened water feeds the water tanks (hot and cold) for the bathrooms etc.

It is quite safe to do so but it is a waste of softened water when rainwater can be used ex a rainwater tank from a suitable downpipe.
