Out in Thailand and I am astonished at the driving habits here. The Traffic in Bangkok makes London look positively free flowing. Thai drivers see a space and they are into it, vehicles just cut in from junctions, motor bikes weave in and out, go the wrong way down dual carriageways often with Mum, Dad and the little one aboard, many have no helmet, However horns are seldom heard and I didn't,see one car or van with body damage or see one incident of even minor road rage. Toyota rule car sales here too.

Thailand has a population of 68 million. Similar to the UK (65 million)

Eighty people die a day on Thai roads. Five die each day in the UK.

Does it still 'seem to work' ?

Apparently 24,000 died last year...73% of them motorcyclists.

Sounds like it works for population control, at least...

Your experience with traffic is opposite to mine, when I visit BKK I drive everywhere and find it very free flowing. Even at rush hour, cars do at least progressively move. London on the other hand has on occasion left me sitting in the same spot for hours! The reason Toyota rules sales, aside from their reputation for reliability is that they build locally, thus avoiding hefty import taxes. Plus they have models specific to developing countries such as the Vios and Fortuna which do the job perfectly well with relatively basic drivetrains. Good cars.

I can't quite get over the casualty numbers, Seemed that no vehicles sported dents and in a week I didn't see even one minor bump so when the figures were known it was quite an eye opener. Thais seem to have a real drink/drive problem and speeding is common according to what L read.. We went round Bangkok quite a lot and it must have got worse for congestion since P Charlton was here last. You can sit for ages in grid lock now, one 5/6 mile taxi trip took almost two hours. The driver said it's always like this now.

Did you try the toll roads? High speed overpasses going right the way through Bangkok. I think alot of the casualties must be bike riders, especially in the less developed parts.

We were ferried around by taxi and the drivers stayed on the normal roads. I don't know about the toll roads but we had several grid lock times. Motorbikes have 73% of accidents according to reports.
