When we are all forced to drive all electric vehicles and charge them up overnight from our own electricity where will the government claim back the VED back ?

Who knows how future government will tax us - that's all that fuel duty, VAT and VED are, just taxes.

If we were staying in the EU, the 5% VAT concession on domestic electricity would end and have to go up to 20% - a bit like the duty differential between road diesel and red diesel - if boats use the same diesel tank for heating and proplsion, they have to buy the high duty road diesel but if they have separate tanks they can use red diesel for heating.

As we aren't staying in the EU, our government can leave VAT on domestic electricity at 5% and make up the shortfall in VED and fuel duty somewhere else.

I suspect that when electric vehicles become the "norm" - if that ever comes to pass, that road usage will be taxed by some sort of pay -per - mile technology, possibly linked to gps systems so the user can be automatically charged for whatever distance they travel and where they travel.

I suspect VED will be charged as it is now but dependent on the power output of the motors.

I doubt it will be charged by the road usage as it the fairer way to charge, our governments will want a bigger income than that.

What's not to like if you are the government?

Your speeding fines/bus lane fines/parkingfines can be automatically collected as well!

If electricity is taxed to make up fuel duty then people without cars who just use domestic power will have to pay too...this will not go down well. I can't see electric cars working unless charging points can cope with the numbers and the charging time or range on a charge comes down significantly. I think the whole thing could be a mess.

Just looked up a Nissan Leaf. 100 miles between charges is claimed, with a quick charge point 80% efficiency can be reached in 30 minutes otherwise it's eight hours from a normal socket. Battery packs will last "8 to ten years", how much is a battery pack? What about second hand values?

Ahh, the Nissan Leaf. I had the wonderful pleasure of being stuck behind one the other day. Obviously nearly out of energy and desperately trying to conserve enough to get to a charging point, the man driving it was maxing out at about 35 - on a 60 limit road.

A nice queue of traffic had built up, and, out of sheer frustration at least 2 people did risky overtakes. Now, whilst I can't condone attempting to get past in an unsafe place, I do have some sympathy for the people who did so.

Reminds me of 3 or 4 years ago, when I was heading for London and an Mitsi i-Miev was working it's way up Stokenchurch cutting - at about 40 ! I wonder if they made it, or if they got wiped out by one of the many HGVs ...

Done that after getting stuck behind a prius once or few times, I know the drivers want the best mpg out of them, but 20mph in a 30 and 26-28mph on a 40mph road is daft

That's not down to low voltage in the battery, it's a low voltage driver.

Some people simply have no idea how to drive.

Put them in a car with a full tank and 1,000 mile range and they would still do 35 in a 60.

We have speed cameras= lots in 30 mph areas and many drivers slow to 25mph or less.. Imbecilic.

The Leaf is currently one of the fastest depreciating cars on our roads. It's actually quite a nice thing to drive but if the owners knew how much they're going to lose come trade-in time there's would be less of a smug 'I'm beating the system' expression on their faces. As a used buy at say 3yrs plus they can make sense at the incredibly cheap prices I've seen them sell for, one was under £3k!

It will depresciate even faster when the Tesla Model 3 and the brand new 2018 Leaf hit the UK market! Despite the depreciation, I suspect that the end-of-life scrap values of electric cars will become higher than petrol / diesel ones because of all the valuable substances that can be recycled from the batteries. Also, when they're at the banger stage, say 10 - 15 years, old Leafs should make excellent cheap local runabouts, even if their geriatric batteries can only manage 30 miles on a charge.

Hardly surprising that EVs have high depreciation - better ones keep being introduced.

I doubt that will change, though a comment made about scrap value- although the car will not be worth a lot, possibly the batteries could be upgraded for the better longer range ones if the price is not prohibitive

though as battery tech improves I suspect prices will drop to a small extent ?
