The Telegraph online is suggesting that BMW might build the electric Mini in Oxford. Anyone interested ?

ORB is very quick to answer !

The independent has an article about an electric car fromToyota. Too late for me I think but does anybody have any ideas about the type of battery.

How many power stations are they going to build after they`ve sold them, and what about charging points, or are they having solar sunroofs fitted ?

More the merrier. I'm delighted to hear news of any new products being built here instead of somewhere else, even if I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole myself.

Yep, I`m all for it, though the drivetrains and batteries will be made in germany and assembled here, and, as Shell are apparently installing 50kw chargers in a lot of their stations, I have no doubt we can look forward to a future of power cuts

How long does it take to recharge an electric car battery?
Imagine the queues at motorway service (charging) stations.
A bit like HS2, that saves 30 mins off a journey time, but doesn’t stop
between stations, how short would the journey between Manchester and London be if the current
Trains didn’t stop??

Your comments about HS2 show you do not or are unable to understand the capacity issues facing several parts of the railway network, south of Rugby. HS2 will (a) allow trains to run on a new line, therefore freeing capacity for more stopping, commuter trains to provide the much needed capacity , while (b) allowing new trains to run faster on a new line than the existing Victorian infrastructure permits, hence the time saving. Also with a separate line, there will be minimal conflict with other trains. It's like you being told you have the M1 from London to Leeds to yourself with no limit on speed. You might drive at 150mph and cover distance in 1hr 20. Any non-stop train can be constrained by other late running trains around it, but trains to/from Manchester are limited to 125mph, so a theoretical time is around 1hr50, normal service is 2hr08min. But by including more stops, the train becomes slower and benefit is lost.. People seldom complain when a building new road that will improve journey times and bypass congestion, railways seem to be different, despite the fact a motorway takes more than twice the space of a pair of high speed lines.

If the Great Central line hadn't been closed as a result of Dr Beeching, there would be adequate capacity. Reopening this route would be easier, quicker and cheaper than HS2, as has been pointed out already.

HS2 is a vanity project for politicians, will run late and over budget to the benefit only of the contractors and politicians (who will probably gain through various hidden benefits from the said contractors.)

In the same way it has been decided to lash out £60 Bn on another Crossrail project, instead of fully electrifying the transPennine route from Liverpool/Leeds/York.

As usual London and the South east are the politicians' favourites, because that's where they live and work, the North is treated as a poor relation.

I long ago gave up expecting common sense or fairness from Westminster, regardless of which lot are in charge.

And not a lot of bits that would have to have (in the scheme of things) many diversions where the track has been built over.

www.gcrailway.co.uk/unify/ is one bit already being done!
