Ford Fiesta 2004 Finesses - Replacement brake pipes - Rayudu

Hi All,

I have a 2004 ford fiesta which has today failed its MOT on corroded rear brake pipes and main break pipes. The reason for the failure is following:

Nearside Rear Brake pipe excessively corroded (3.6.B.2c)

Offside Rear Brake pipe excessively corroded (3.6.B.2c)

Nearside Brake pipe excessively corroded main brake pipe (3.6.B.2c)

Offside Brake pipe excessively corroded main brake pipe (3.6.B.2c)

Nearside Rear Road wheel distorted (4.2.A.1a)

Local garage quoted £200 + VAT for the brake pipes and £30 for replacing the wheel, which sounds a lot. In total he quoted me £230 + VAT + £40 (MOT).

Any idea how much it will cost?

It's not a small amount of work. I don't think that price is particularly steep.

Just like you, other people have to actually make a living.

yep seems a reasonable cost to keep car on road for another year.

Might be worth haggling over the re test fee if they are doing all the work.

Looks like a very fair price to me.All the brake pipes will need to be custom made.May need to drop the fuel tank for access.Road wheel will be s/hand.New one from Ford is nearly £100.Go for it.

Approximately how long the brake pipes last? 2 years ago they have replaced the Front brake pipes.

Presmuably you mean the solid pipes not the flexibles.

Steel pipes anything from 4 years if you leave them bare to the elements, to for ever if you keep them greased, 'Kunifer' type copper alloyed replacement pipes should last for many long years.

Just like the car they're underneath really, neglected it won't last long, looking after it can see it last more than twice as long.

Well, you may soon need new ones. The ones on my 37yr old TR7 are original - because I keep them greased.

If it's only superficial corrosion, the OP could scrape them clean, paint them with Kurust, then either something like Hammerite or just grease, and they will probably pass if he takes it to another MoT station. Garages love to fail them on the slightest hint of corrosion - nice little earner...

£200 to avoid a possibly catastrophic brake failure seems like a good deal to me.

Done with the repairs , they charged me £250 for replacing the brake pipes + 2nd hand wheel + MOT fee.
