It's a stupid tax. Your penalising the responsible consumer who is looking to do the right thing. And encouraging the irresponsible to not buy cover at all.

As a instrument of social policy it's perverse.

If you need to raise revenue make the tax system nuch much flatter simpler and really crack down on evasion. Especially huge multi national companies. Stop the sweetheart deals. Why not put the hmrc revenue inspectors on performance related pay only. Then they might be ar@#d to answer the dang phone in under thirty minutes.

It is not a stupid tax, it is a tax.

In switzerland my overall tax rate was a lot lower than the uk, and yes, i feel a lot easier, but taxed on my house CHF 12,000. a year as no mortgage...

Not nice!

The unwashed (and some of the washed) will not have insurance/ved or licences/mot's regardless of the cost.

I saw one on tv complaining "how will i get home now?" answer the bus stop is just up the road...

And some quite nice motors are either scrapped or put to auction if condition merits it.

We all want NHS/roads/bin collections/council services.

Finally, having had to call the pensions service and HMRC now i am retired and therefore claiming state pension and a non uk pension, my phone calls have been answered in acceptable times and dealt with with courtesy.

I have been able to check and do lots of it online.

(small digression) My energy supplier (one of the smaller ones (isupply) are excellent on the phone, as are Anglian water and Colchester council.
