In the tread about the V60 and my difficulty in finding a T4 to test drive Avant said:

My money's on you ending up with a Leon estate or whatever they call it.

Well he was wrong. New car ordered and its not a Leon estate.

Any guesses?

No prizes for the winner.

Well, that heading will have people looking.....

If not a Leon I'd say it's between a V60 and an Octavia estate.

On the suggestions made so far:

V60 - Found a T4 2 litre to drive but it was 130 miles away. Since we were still unsure about the boot space and spare wheel we decided to give it a miss.

Octavia - After our bad experience almost 7 years ago with 2 Octavia Estates (both were painfully noisy) considering the car actually matches our needs perfectly we decided to give the Estate another try. Garage only had a 1.4 TSi SE hatch so to test the estate they also lent us a 2 litre diesel DSG SE-L DSG. The hatch was pretty good, the only concern was wind noise from the top of the screen over 50 mph. Screen was Skoda brand so probably original but it would have been a real pain on a 400 mile trip at motorway speeds. So off in the estate, windnoise only evident in exactly the same spot at 75 mph plus so not an issue in that car but since it came from exactly the same spot still concerning. But the noise from the back was as bad as the 2010 cars. The mixture of tyre noise and some other noise would have been impossible to live with (rear tyres were Dunlops with loads of tread so surely not the cause). Even if we had liked it there was another issue, Skoda has closed the order book until February at the earliest so unless your dealer can source a stock car to match your spec you are stuffed. Gave it a miss. Big shame.

Logan - suppose they look big enough and they are cheap but even if I had considered them the fact that the best engine (that suits us) is a 0.9 petrol turbo would have resulted in not looking any further. After the incredible VAG 1.4 TSi 140 PS we had for 3.5 years it would have been a real disapointment for sure.

Focus ST - Focus (estate and hatch) have no more rear seat space than the Leon so no point considering.

BMW 2 series - looked last year when the wife swapped. Appeared OK but once the pet crate was on the rear seat there was no space for a front seat passenger.

VX Astra - Not considered.

308 estate - looked at it last year for the wife. Huge boot but less rear seat space than Leon hatch. What were the designers thinking when they produced a cramped family estate. OK its probably fine for families with small kids that don't need much rear leg room.

Subaru - no way having heard a colleagues experiences of dealer prices for servicing and their techniques to ensure the customer has the wallet seriously lightened at every opportunity. That and the fact they don't do anything to suit our needs and budget.

Keep trying.

If an Octavia estate would have suited your needs but for the road noise, so would a Golf estate 1.4 TSI. Or a similarly-powered Tiguan which isn't all that much more expensive.

Road noise I suspect depends at least partly on the make of tyre fitted: none of my three Octavias had a problem. But VW may well fit more soundproofing, so there'd be less of a tyre lottery.

Avant was wrong - skidpan

But why have 3 Octavia estates that we have driven been noisy to the point of distraction wheras the hatch we tried last week was fine for road noise. Our Leon uses the same MQB floor pan and the same sized tyres and is a nice quiet place to be. From memory the worst Octavia in 2010 was on Dunlops as was the noisy estate last week. The better estate in 2010 was on Bridgestones (I think) and the hatch last week was on Contis. Our Leon is on Michelins. I am truly baffled.

As for the Golf its very expensive compared to its stablemates and to get the 150PS engine its GT spec only. You are right when you say the Tiguan is not much more expensive and we have looked at one in the showroom. In SE spec its a nice place to sit and well equipped but it was the same problem we had with the Volvo garage, they did not sell petrol Tiguans and were not interested in speaking to us.

It must be a resonance due to the structural difference between the hatch and estate bodies. I'd think the hatch has a more rigid body because of the shorter roof ... or maybe it's just the larger empty space of the estate amplifying the noise?

I'd wager there is no soundproofing to speak of around the rear wheel arches, and the open estate space is amplifying the sound from there.

I've had great success in quietening a few cars down by soundproofing in this (and other areas) between the plastic trim and bare painted steel found directly underneath.

Would be very interesting if one of our flock with an Octy removed the trim and had a look for us (and tried putting some insulator in a a test), i'd also wager the A4 estate gets soundproofing in that spot or has carpeted arches, its such a pity because a couple of hours DIY and £50 of self adhesive sound insulator would probably transform the vehicle.

PS another Leon?

Skidpan, have you decided to go for a Seat Ateca?

This is something I have considered. If true no amount of soundproofing would help. But if it is correct why have Skoda not done something about it in the almost 7 years between my test drives. Or is the simple fact they keep selling them and only me and the wife notice the noise is a factor.

or maybe it's just the larger empty space of the estate amplifying the noise?

With the cover across the space in the hatch and estate the space is virtually identical. I tried the estate with the cover open and closed, no difference.

PS another Leon?

I said in the original post it was not a Leon estate and considering our existing Leon is a bit small its not another Leon. But the Leon is a fine car, one I will have a soft spot for in the years ahead and I will continue to recommend it on this forum.

have you decided to go for a Seat Ateca?

Very tempting but no. Not actually looked at one in the flesh, one of the problems with Seat for us is the lack of a local dealer. Even Volvo have an official service agent 2 miles away. But we have looked at its sister the Tiguan which with the bigger discounts available is little more expensive. The Tiguan is a perfect size but when you consider the manufacturers figures appear to be saying its a fair bit bigger than the Ateca we do wonder if the Ateca would actually fit the bill. Suppose we should have looked since the only way of knowing for sure is to try one but I am pretty certain it would have been tight for our needs. Bottom line is the car we have bought is bigger, better equipped and cheaper.

One problem for us that all these SUV's have is the access for the dog. As they get older they are less able to jump in and need a lift, I can manage to do that but the wife can't. Our current dog (Staffie cross) which is almost 14 years old and very fit for her age struggles to jump into the Note and although its higher than a conventional hatch is way lower than the typical SUV. You can buy ramps to help but using one when parked between other car is impossible.

Load covers do nothing to reduce noise levels, may even increase it by acting as a "boom-box".

Going back a few decades, estates were always a lot noisier than their equivalent saloon, to the point where premium/luxury brands avoided making them - but car sound insulation has moved on a long way since then.

My previous car was a Hyundai Santa Fe - not noisy in normal use but certain conditions would make door closing sound very tinny - so maybe the budget brands do still take short cuts.

OK, here is the news, its a Skoda Superb SE hatch 1.4 TSi 150 PS Petrol manual.

Ordrered and price protected before the £700 + price increase tomorrow (thanks to Brexit). 14 week delivery approx for a factory order so fits in nicely with my wish for a "17" reg car.

Its quiet with no road roar or wind noise.

Its also very big but goes very well.

Good choice. Will be interested to hear your experiences of the "active cylinder technology" and whether it works or if it's just another way of VAG securing favourable results on the EU consumption test.

Good choice skidpan. My Superb has just been through another MOT and at 11 years old with 207K miles it is still excellent. I hope you have the same experience that I have enjoyed the past 11 years. Cheers Concrete

Call me an old cynic but I fully expect it will be "just another way of VAG securing favourable results on the EU consumption test".

Lets look at the facts. The Superb is bigger, heavier and more powerful than my Leon yet according to the official figures has a combined of 57.7mpg wheras my Leon has a combined of 54mpg. Is that likely to be realised in the real world, no way.

But by taking delivery before the change in VED rates its still only £30 a year which makes me very happy.

Great choice, I'm a big fan of the Superb. The estate was on my shortlist last time but the steering committee wanted something tall she could lord it over everyone else. Well bought!

Agreed - great choice. It's a testament to the efficiency of the 1.4 TFSI engine that it can pull the big car along without seeming sluggish.
