I'll let the experts argue the case for the Heathrow runway 3 itself--but when it is eventually fully operational( answer please ?)--I trust the new Heathrow will have first class access roads to all terminals, with easy drop off /parking and a dynamic public transport interchange that allows fast -and cheap-entry and exit from not only the centre of london --but also from the north, the south, the east and the west?

And while we are at it--why not build a rail ringroad with strategic stations all around the M25 perimiter?

Some years ago a company wanted to build a freight line to bypass London using the m25 western line, the NIMBYs put paid to that.

I dropped off swmbo a few weeks ago at Thiefrow and collected her 2 weeks later, and access to the airport is difficult now, to say the least,

Today in the news M4 closed most of the day j3-j1 Fuel spill.. A4 closed between sutton ct rd and hogarth roundabout.. A3 A40 and all w and sw london rds busier than usual as a result... moving from hendon flyover to neasden flyover took my Dr 2 hours. He gave up and went home.

AFIAK, the M25 will need serious diversion to make room for the 3rd runways so many years of misery will be caused by that alone.

By the time it's built (bonkers decision; obvious place for new airport for next 100yrs is just north of Cooling) we will probably have perfected teleportation.

I believe the plan is to put the M25 - all 14 lanes of it - in a tunnel under the new runway!

Has anybody seen any REPORTS re the earliest date this runway will be operational?

Reading/viewing news reports today make it sound as if the runway will open tomorrow morning-once they've mowed the grass away and dealt with protesters in an urgently convened evening meeting.

Fine for the media to be positive--but.....

According to an article in the Telegraph

A new runway could be operational by 2025 but many believe it will take even longer.

"And while we are at it - why not build a rail ringroad with strategic stations all around the M25 perimeter?'

I'm not sure that enough people would want to travel by train in that way - e.g. between Watford and Slough - but what is needed is 'parkway' stations at that distance from London with large car parls and direct trains into the relevant London terminus.

Crossrail, or the Eliazabeth Line as it will be called, is a start, but has anyone thought about extra car parking spaces at the stations? Maybe they have, but I haven't seen anything about it. Fortunately, having semi-retired to Dorset, I can look on it from afar.

It's easy to see why Heathrow would be a good choice, but there are as many good (but different) reasons for rejecting it .... perhaps with decent rail links the argument could be swayed, but in reality it's better to look for a less noise intrusive site - the much ridiculed Boris Island offered this ...

just thinking of life in West London whilst the construction is ongoing is enough to make me run a mile, the traffic congeston, walking pace journey times and pollution, for me I've escaped London to the Kent coast, other side of London too so hopefully no direct impact. I did fly from Heathrow last year, T5, lots of congestion and journey home took nearly 5 hours!

Oh good traffic congestion and area overcrowding at breaking point already, so an excellent idea to expand Heathrow Hell further.

You know they won't be happy with one extra runway and 10 year after its up and running they'll want more.

Friends of my wife had their house compulsory purchased probably 5 years ago in Sipson along with others, and now we're at decision time, do stop unrinating on people and telling them its raining.

Heathrow will never ever be fit for purpose, even if I live to be 150. The whole lot needs to be bulldozed and much needed housing stock built instead. As someone who occasionally travels to Europe on business, it might as well not exist, (KLM / Lufthansa are far far superior to BA if you live "up-north").

Schiphol is one of the best airports I have used. One terminal, plenty of runways, easy and quick (and cheap) rail transfer to city centre................................. maybe someone actually planned it like that?

Last time I used Heathrow to connect to Manchester, it took me more than 2 hours to transfer from T2 to T5, how crazy is that?

The best airport in the world ever as far as i am concerned --ultra purpose built--with fantastic access by MTR(tube) is Hong Kong.

Did you get lost?

Heathrow -new runway-access roads/rail ? - Wackyracer

I think the problem with Heathrow is it evolved rather than being a big purpose built airport from the start.

It would have been better for a large new airport to be built somewhere outside the M25.
