the van was up for just under 3k i got it down to 3500. i paid him a depsot of 50 pounds, not alot but it was somthing to say im interested andi will be up. i managed to book a ticket and traveled t york 250 miles away from my home on a train. when i got there, the van wasnt great at all, heater wasnt working, tires all balled, gashes in the side of the tires,, i took for a test drive and it would not rev 3000 revs and would lose power, thick blue smoke coming from the back of it... anyway is said to the guy, i cannot take the van, he handed back my money, and said the other guy who i paid my deposit to will send it back over.. and way back in a cab back on the train, 300 later in travel i sent him a message on ebay asking for my money, he said its non refundable , i said yes i paid that on the basis the van was as described but i clearly wasnt.. he still refuses.. its not all about the 50 ounds but principle he tried to do me. i wang the money back,, i would urge anyone stay away from xxxx on ebay, even the local dealer up there said stay well away.....

where do i stand legally if i go trading standards

Personally. I would say forget it, but you can raise a case with e bay and give negative feedback.

But, you saw the condition of the van AND took it for a test drive?

Research Vauxhall vivaro engine problems, one of those things...

Never never never pay a deposit for something unless the deal is essentially done, you've seen the car/van and are certain you want it. You then pay a deposit to allow you to go and sort your finances/insurance out. I always refuse to accept a deposit from any buyer until they've seen and are fully satisfied with the motor. As a final note don't touch a Vauxhall Vivaro/Renault Trafic unless it's an early non-turbo 1.9. They're notorious for engine problems. Pay the extra and get a VW Caddy/Transporter or a Toyota Hiace instead it'll save you a fortune in the long run.

Another thing : buying cheap, buy local !

I'm constantly amazed by the number of people who come on here with 'problems' with cars that they've bought from a garage 200+miles away.

Remember, if you have problems, it is YOUR responsibility, at YOUR cost, to get it back to the selling garage for repairs to be carried out. Furthermore, the selling garage is under no obligation to provide you with alternative transport while your vehicle is being fixed.

So you could buy a vehicle 200 miles away, a couple of months something goes wrong with it. You then have to get it transported back to the seller, arrange with them to get it fixed, wait while that is being done, and then either go and collect it, or get it transported back to you. All that transport / travel, and alternative transport while it is being fixed, would be at YOUR expense.

"....the van was up for just under 3k i got it down to 3500".

Eh?

Maybe reverse haggling is the new fashion....?

Seriously though, I quite understand your point about the principle of the thing, but for £50 it isn't worth the hassle.

Best to try to find a Ford Transit at the right price.
