Airport taxi and drop off exceeds flight price! - FoxyJukebox

WARNING-read carefully

Living 5 miles from Luton airport a booked taxi costs around £20 plus a £3 drop off charge, plus tip £2(?). Just about ok -I suppose. Howver-this fare naturally rises to £25 if you are going for an early flight with "check in" at 06.00. Total cost £28.

BUT BUT-BUT-ON RETURN-Now that there is no taxi rank at Luton(yes-NO taxi rank at this airport)-a pre-booked taxi may well have to wait over an hour in either pick up or short stay-paying up to and beyond of £10 before adding the fare and tip(£22 minimum)-whilst frustrated passengers navigate the living hell of an hour in passport control and another 40 mins in baggage reclaim. Total potential charge of £32

£29.99 is the basic cost of quite a few Easy jet flights at the moment .

Or ... you could use 'meet and greet' which I used in Manchester the other week.

Drop off car, hand over keys, ealk for 2 minutes into T2. On return clear passport control, get luggage (7am arrival, so only 20 minutes from getting out of my seat to walking out of the terminal) 2 min walk back to the car, get in and drive. Cost £70. Other and far cheaper parking facilities are available. (I live 60 miles from Manchester airport, so taxi would be very expensive)

No airports have taxi ranks for waiting for pickups - far too easy for someone to 'fake-plate' or steal a taxi, load it up with 200kg of chemicals and a load of nails, and you've got one hell of a bomb.

You're making a mountain out of a molehill.

On return, get off the plane, through passport control and baggage reclaim. All of these take unpredictable times. Wait until you've got your stuff and only then phone for a taxi, asking them to pick you up at the drop-off point. It will take you about five to ten minutes to walk there, by which point the taxi will either have arrived or will shortly do so. That way your drop-off charge is only (!) £3. That's what we do, anyway.

I agree the traffic/parking/drop-off arrangements at Luton Airport are appalling. When Junction 10 (M1) was recently upgraded one of the intentions behind it was to get traffic off the motorway and into the airport faster, but that has simply pushed the traffic problem nearer the airport itself.

At the moment things are exacerbated by a new remodelling of the traffic flow and new parking at the airport, but I fear that limitations of space mean the improvements will be minimal.

We landed at Southend earlier in the year-no problem with parking-used off-site with minibus to take to airport and collect on return but it took longer to get thro' immigration than the length of flight and we were the ONLY plane.

I live 35 miles from Manchester airport and a pre-booked mincab is £40 fixed cost one-way. For the 4 mile trip to Liverpool airport its about £8 in a black-cab. There are NO extras at Manchester and a £1.50 extra coming home from Liverpool, (know as the "airport owners tax" - and they live offshore, I wonder why)!

At £20 for a 5 mile journey plus extras to Luton, I'm glad I live in the frozen north!

Just a note of caution though regarding Liverpool airport, if you land at a time when LFC have a home game, the taxi rank is normally deserted - which is no joke on a wet weekday night!

Are there no Everton-supporting taxi drivers then?
