Mondeo / Renault Fluence - Car hire: ordered Mondeo, got Fluence ? - MTD

quick question - hired a car for a short break in Ireland (a wedding), chose Ford Mondeo or similar (familiar with car as Dad has one and fits my wife & I plus 3 kids plus bags & buggies easily) - arrived late in the Evening at Shannon Airport and got given a Renault Fluence that "is the same size car".

It was late, we were tired, i wasn't familiar with that car, so off we went to collect.

Quickly apparent it was not the same size as a Mondeo. and we couldnt' get 2 normal sized suitcases plus the Baby buggy into the boot at once, let alone the kids hand luggage little bags as well. End result was buggy lay on the floor in the back and kids hated it there, and we just did short trips and not any sightseeing as planned.

Is it worth complaining at all ? is a 4.6m long saloon (Megane with a boot) classed the same as a 4.8m saloon like a Mondeo ? i just feel i didn't get what i expected and pay for, used Holiday Autos and the actual hirer was Europcar. The car was otherwise fine and plenty roomy enough in the cabin, buggy on the feet excpeted.

I would have expected a 'or similar' to be a Passat or Insignia or optima or something similar in size and cost.

Sorry, but you should have refused the car as soon as it became apparent that you couldn't fit all the luggage into it. You failed to do so, your own fault.

As to your complaint about not being able to do any sightseeing, it seems a bit of a ridiculous complaint. As soon as you'd unloaded the main luggage at your hotel / whatever, you'd have had space in the boot for the baby buggy and other stuff in the boot.

Finally, the Fluence is listed (by this site) as 4.75 metres long. It was 13cm longer than the Megane saloon it is based on, to allow for battery space.

ah, it was nearly 11pm and with 3 grouchy kids, grouchy wife plus queue of other people still waiting to be served, it wasn't really an option at the time to go back and get it changed.

we had to cart around a lot of stuff for the first two days like cakes and dresses, which was about the same room as the 2 suitcases, so the buggy remained at the kids feet. Your point is valid for the last day - unfort having to check out of Hotel at 11am meant the luggage did indeed stay in the boot. Apologies I did not explain more initially why it affected our travel plans.

elsewhere on the internet I get 4622mm as being the length for a new Fluence.
either way, smaller than a Mondeo at 4871mm

That's when it's been parked a few times in Paris.

I'd have refused it because I'd been given a Renault!

Always worth complaining if you aren't satisfied. Explain to them how it practically ruined your trip, as you have to us. See what they come back with, could include future discounts, partial refund, nothing at all, etc. Who knows! Be polite but firm/dissapointed as you have done.

The Fluence is a Megane saloon as you say, so it's in the same category as Astra, Focus, golf etc. The Mondeo equivalents are as you have suggested.

Just keep everything in writing, some poor soul in a call centre following a script algorithm isn't likely to be much help.

I would say yes it is, and not unreasonably so, both being between 4.5m and 5.0m. And I'm willing to bet that a 4.6m Skoda Octavia would have swallowed cases, buggy and kiddies' bags, with room left over for a kitchen sink.

I suspect that the Fluence doesn't sell very fluently in Ireland, any more than it would if sold over here. So Europcar would have got a good bulk deal on them, and the men in suits making that decision wouldn't have known or cared about luggage capacity.
